Eastridge Center (also called Eastridge Mall) is a 1.4 million square foot (GLA) shopping mall in eastern San Jose, California owned by General Growth Properties.[1] The mall has an enclosed shopping area, cooking restaurants and theaters. It is a split level mall, with part of the mall being 3 levels, and part of it 2 levels. Eastridge Mall is located in San Jose CA, in between Tully Road, East Capitol Expressway, and Quimby Road. From Hwy 101, exit east on Tully Road.

The anchor tenants are AMC Theatres, Macy's, JC Penney, and Sears.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) operates the Eastridge Transit Center bus station on the side of the property near Capitol Expressway (County Route G21). The mall is across Tully Road from Reid-Hillview Airport, and was built under the approach corridor to both of the airport's runways. Other nearby landmarks include Lake Cunningham and the Raging Waters water park.

History

It was opened on May 17, 1971 with the original Anchors: Macy's, Liberty House, J. C. Penney, Joseph Magnin Co., and Sears. Eastridge Center was the Nation's largest enclosed shopping mall in the West. Of course, the department stores were Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, and Liberty House. Emporium-Capwell replaced Liberty House when the chain pulled out of California. After Macy's bought Emporium-Capwell, they shuttered the store. It sat vacant until the 2005 remodel when they demolished the store. Scores of visitors came not only to shop, but to marvel at its size. A scene Robert Redford's The Candidate was filmed there.

In 2005 a major remodeling brought in an AMC Theater and outdoor streetscape, with tenants such as Barnes & Noble and Bed Bath & Beyond. Other new stores continue to open inside, as well. The general consensus is that the renovation is a success.

In February 2012, two teenage boys were stabbed and left in critical condition at the mall, which led to J. C. Penney and Macy's closing, despite other stores not doing so.[2]

In the wake of the 2012 Aurora shooting, a mysterious package was thrown into an AMC theater at Eastridge during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises, which led to an evacuation of the theater.[3]

On July 20, 2012, a fire broke out near the mall at a homeless encampment in a 100-by-100 ft area, but was extinguished before the fire could reach any buildings.[4]

In September 2013, Bed Bath & Beyond announced that it was closing its Eastridge store in January 2014. Eastridge added Round 1 Bowling & Amusement and 24 Hour Fitness in the former Bed Bath & Beyond space. 24 Hour Fitness opened on March 28, 2015 while Round 1 Bowling & Amusement opened in fall 2015.[5]

On January 15, 2016, a joint adventure between Pacific Retail Growth Partners and Silverpeak Real Estate Partners acquired the Eastridge Shopping Mall from General Growth Properties, Inc. The total acquisition price was $200 million. The new owners announced that they will be investing approximately $15 million to upgrade the Mall.[6]

In December 2017, it was announced that Barnes & Noble would close its Eastridge store in January 2018.[7]
