Westfield UTC, formerly known as University Towne Centre, is a one-million square-foot, three-level outdoor shopping center in the University City community of San Diego, California built in 1977. It lies just east of La Jolla, near the University of California, San Diego campus in the University City neighborhood. It is owned by the Westfield Corporation. Its anchor stores include Macy’s and Nordstrom. It features a 14-screen Arclight Cinema. Sears closed in July 2017.[2]

History

In 2008 a one-billion dollar revitalization plan for the shopping center was approved by the San Diego City Council. However, due to the recession, the revitalization project was put on hold for several years and later reduced to $500 million.[3]

In 2011, the first, $180 million phase of the revitalization commenced: the mall's food court was transformed into an indoor/outdoor Dining Terrace while the former Robinsons-May building was subdivided to house three new retailers: a large-scale Forever 21 clothing store, a relocated 24 Hour Fitness sports club, and a 14-screen ArcLight Cinema and adding Tiffany & Co., J.Crew, and Tesla Motors.[4]

After this, a 400,000-square-foot expansion along Genessee Avenue began in phases.

In 2016, construction began on the San Diego Trolley's Blue Line extension to UTC Transit Center by 2021.[5] That same year, a new phase of construction began including a new parking structure on the west side (of which the trolley station will be located at the south end), 251,000 square feet of new retail space, and a new 144,000 square foot Nordstrom anchor that opened in October 2017. The old Nordstrom and Sears stores are currently empty.[6][7]

A 23-story, 300-unit luxury apartment building under construction at the southeast corner of the site, projected to open in 2019.[6]
