In the Chicago mayoral election of 1977, Illinois politician Michael A. Bilandic was elected as mayor, took office as permanent mayor on June 22, 1977. Due to the sudden death of mayor Richard J. Daley on December 20, 1976, Bilandic was selected by the Chicago city council to serve as acting mayor for six months until this election. In the general election, Bilandic faced Republican nominee Dennis H. Block and Socialist Workers nominee Dennis Brasky. Bilandic won the election with 77% of the vote.[2]
