Caravela is the northernmost island of the Bissagos Islands of Guinea-Bissau, it is the seat of the Sector of Caravela, the sector's population is about 10,500 in 2008. The area is 128 km, its length is 19.345 km and its width is 10 km. Its 2008 population was 4,662. The island is heavily forested with mangroves. It also has white, sandy beaches. Caravela has a small airfield.

Neighboring islands includes Carache nearly a kilometer from the island shore, Unhacomo and Unhacomozinho further south, it is 55 km south-southwest from the coastline of the mainland.
