The 2008–09 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 8 November and finished on 3 May. Académica won their second title since the break-up and qualified into the 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championships, their title was the next in five years and their next national appearance in two years, also it was their sixth regional title and also qualified into the regional championships which was their recent competition, the club later won the island title. Also qualified was Sporting who won the national title last season, in the regionals, they were runner-up. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS).[1][2] All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.
Again, Sporting Praia was the defending team of the title. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in both divisions.[2]
Overview
A total of 231 goals were scored, fewer than last season. Sporting scored the most with 40, second was Boavista with 39 and third was second placed Sporting with 31. The least was Celtic with only 9, second were both Desportivo and Travadores with 10.[2] On the opposites, Vila Nova conceded the most with 33, second least were Celtic and Ribeira Grande with 30. Sporting conceded the least with 14.
In the Second Division competition, AJ Black Panthers won the title and would be promoted next season. 9th placed Celtic was relegated after winning the decisional match competitions. Ribeira Grande was also relegated, alongside Celtic competed in the Second Division next season. Both Ribeira Grande and Celtic did return to this division until next season.
