From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔəw-ŋ (pot; vat; jar) (reconstructed provisionally). Related to (OC *qoːnʔ, “bowl”) and possibly (OC *qoːŋs, “urn”). Compare Burmese အို (ui, pot) (Schuessler, 2007).
