Fortune 500

De Fortune 500 is een ranglijst van bedrijven uit de Verenigde Staten, geordend van groot naar klein op basis van hun jaaromzet. De lijst wordt jaarlijks opgesteld en gepubliceerd door het tijdschrift Fortune.[1] De eerste 100 bedrijven in de lijst worden ook als Fortune 100 aangeduid en Fortune 1000 verwijst naar een gelijksoortige lijst van 1000 bedrijven.

Geschiedenis

De Fortune 500 werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1955 voor het jaar 1954. Sindsdien hebben meer dan 1800 bedrijven in de lijst gestaan.

Koppositie

Slechts 4 bedrijven hebben ooit de eerste positie ingenomen in de Fortune 500-lijst, te weten General Motors, ExxonMobil, Wal-Mart en Shell Oil (Amerikaanse tak van Royal Dutch Shell).

Er bestaat nog andere dergelijke lijsten. De Forbes 500, die opgesteld en gepubliceerd wordt door het tijdschrift Forbes, sorteert de bedrijven eveneens van groot naar klein maar gebruikt hiervoor een ander criterium, net als de S&P 500. De Fortune Global 500 en de Forbes Global 2000 sorteren de bedrijven wereldwijd, en niet alleen Amerikaanse.
