It was used as a national flag beginning in 1863.The Long tinh kỳ or Dragon Star Flag.[3] Influences: Yellow is the imperial color. ["Emperor" is hoàng đế (皇帝). Hoàng (黃) is Sino-Vietnamese for "yellow".] The color red is connected to "south".
1885–1890Flag of emperor Đồng KhánhĐại Nam Đế Kỳ[3] (Personal standard of the Emperor of Đại Nam). Đại Nam (大南, great south) was the official name of Vietnam at this time.
1890–1920Flag of emperors Thành Thái, Duy Tân and Khải ĐịnhĐại Nam Quốc Kỳ (National flag of Đại Nam), originally designed by Emperor Thành Thái[5] Influences: Yellow, beyond the meaning of a royal symbol, is the traditional color of Vietnamese nation and the color of Vietnamese skin, red is the color of Vietnamese blood together is the "red blood, yellow skin" [note 1] of the Vietnamese. The three red stripes symbolized the united Vietnam under three regions Northern Vietnam (Bắc Kỳ), Central Vietnam (Trung Kỳ) and Southern Vietnam (Nam Kỳ) [6][7][8]
