History

Kanpur airport was formally a military airport designated for the use of Indian Air Force that is why it is still referred to as Chakeri Air Force Station. It was only in 1970 that the commercial flights started to operate from this airport towards Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai. From the year 2004, it started functioning as a regular domestic airport connecting Kanpur to almost all the major cities of the country. AAI is planning to augment the existing Chakri civil enclave facility to accommodate larger Airbus type passenger aircraft and cargo handling capacities of Kanpur Airport. Plan to construct a new longue and car parking for increasing the passenger handling capacity is already in pipeline and the land has already been identified for the same.

Airport Extension

Due to the limited expansion options available and restrictions enforced by the Airports Authority of India, the airport will not be able to cope with the growing demand for air traffic into Kanpur. Hence, an additional terminal of airport in 300 acres has been proposed on Kanpur Prayagraj National Highway. It will be a state of art terminal with modern facilities. There will be 6 hangers and waiting room of 300 passengers capacity with a four-lane connectivity from Highway.
