Gorakhpur Airport

Gorakhpur Airport (IATA: GOP, ICAO: VEGK) is an airport located in Gorakhpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The Airports Authority of India operates it as a civil enclave at the Gorakhpur Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force. From the city the airport is 5 miles (8.0 km). The airport covers an area of 0.71 acres. In June 2017, the Civil Terminal building was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath. It will be expanded in the following months together with a conveyor belt.[1]

Military airbase

Air Force Station Gorakhpur belongs to the Indian Air Force. No. 43 Squadron IAF operates from here. These squadrons have regular military exercises, other than this they actively take part in rescue operations.The helicopter unit No. 101 Helicopter Unit is located in Gorakhpur Military Airbase. SEPECAT Jaguar aircraft are also based at Gorakhpur.[2]

Infrastructure

Gorakhnath Airport has one runway that is designated 11/29 and has dimensions of 2,743 by 46 metres (9,000 ft × 150 ft). The new terminal is able to handle 200 passengers in peak hours and has an area of 23,500 sq ft.[3][4] Air India Regional flies daily between Gorakhpur and Delhi.[5]

New Gorakhpur Airport

Due to the limited expansion options available and restrictions enforced by the Airports Authority of India, the airport will not be able to cope with the growing demand for air traffic into Gorakhpur. Hence, a greenfield airport for Gorakhpur in 300 acres has been proposed on Gorakhpur Varanasi National Highway.[10]
