Chittagong Medical College

Chittagong Medical College (CMC) is situated in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh and is the oldest medical college in the south-eastern part of the country. It is affiliated with a tertiary level hospital where clinical students are trained in medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and other sub-specialties. Currently, students from Bhutan, India, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are studying in various phases of MBBS course alongside the native students.

History

Chattogram Medical College Hospital was established at the present site in 1960 with only 120 beds and the outpatient services. At that time the young hospital housed only the Departments of Surgery and Gynecology and Obstetrics. Chittagong Hospital Housed the department of Medicine and allied specialties still 1969 and thereafter it remained affiliated with Chittagong Medical College Hospital as one of its teaching hospitals.

Construction of the present purpose-built six-storied CMCH was completed in 1969, which now accommodates all the clinical Departments including all their subspecialties. The hospital, which had a capacity of 500 beds initially, gradually increased its strength to 750 and finally to 1313. It runs big outpatient departments in the specialties like medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, skin and venereal diseases, clinical pathology, general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, paediatric surgery, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynaecology, radiotherapy, radiology and dentistry with an average turnover in excess of 2000 a day. The independent turnover in 1999 was about 50,000. Over 18,000 surgical operations were performed that year.

As years passed, new treatment facilities kept being added and at present a nuclear medicine Centre for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, a coronary care unit, an endoscopy unit, a kidney dialyzing unit, a Model Family Planning Centre, a Centre for Extended Program for Immunisation (EPI) are among the many facilities available to the in- and outpatients.

Library

“Shimu Granthagar” the main college library is located in the western block of the college building. Extended over two stories, it consists of a reference for the use of the faculty and doctors of the College and Hospital. International medical journals are regularly being received through donations from the British Council, the Asia Foundation and WHO. Journals are also being received from the National Health Library and Documentation Center (NHLDC), Dhaka.

There are two reading rooms with an accommodation of about 120 students. They can borrow text and other books to read on the reading room of the library as well on a take home basis for a limited period. All the students of CMC are members of the British Council Library and each of them can Borrow maximum four books at a time and keep them for as long as six months. This provides an excellent opportunity for our students to access to modern medical text books of their own liking.

The college library has a collection of over 26000 volumes of text books – about 2800 titles. Besides, there is a collection of about 1000 slides used as teaching aid by the teachers. Our Library is also providing modern internet access facilities.

Medical Skill Centre

The centre is located at the 5th floor of the Hospital beside the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It offers excellent facilities to the students to practice skills on different clinical activities. Among the facilities available are mannequins, dummies, a variety of equipments and instruments, electronic audio-visual training aids like closed circuit television connected to the operation-theater rooms, video cassette recording and replaying facilities, public address system movies, still cameras, slide and movie projectors and so on. Tastefully decorated and richly equipped, this centre is a pride addition to the repertoire of the teachers to the teachers to impart effective practical teaching to their students.

Eligibility

Each year eligibility is determined by DGHS under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh. Nevertheless, the basic requirement for admission in a Medical college in Bangladesh is that a candidate must have appeared Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination or their equivalent examinations although the minimum grades required vary from year to year. It is also required that a candidate must have Biology, Chemistry and Physics among the subjects taken in HSC.

Post graduate courses

There are 31 post graduate courses in different disciplines running in CMC. It has MD courses in internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, neuromedicine, nephrology and dermatology. It also runs MS courses in general surgery, urology, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ENT, ophthalmology and obstetrics and gynaecology. The selection of students in various post graduate courses is done by the local admission committee under the directives of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and DGHS. The Admission test for MD,MS courses is held on the last Friday of September & M.Phil, MPH and all Diploma courses is held on the last Friday of March. Each year classes of MD, MS Courses start in January and M.Phil, MPH, Diploma Courses begin in July. Chittagong Medical College (CMC) is one of the few Medical Colleges in Bangladesh which has postgraduate courses along with graduation courses (MBBS and BDS). The postgraduate medical education program was introduced in 1992, with three diploma courses in Child Health (DCH), Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGO) and Anaesthesiology (DA) In 2002, a total of 28 post graduate courses were added in various clinical, para-clinical and basic subjects. In 2005, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology and Head neck surgery and MD in Forensic Medicine were included.

Among the 31 Post graduate (PG) courses MD in 9 disciplines, M.Phil in 6 disciplines, MPH in 1 discipline and diplomas in 7 disciplines. All the Post Graduate courses are organized as per the recommended ordinance & curriculum of the University of Chittagong. These courses are recognized by BMDC. Under-graduate courses are certified by University of Chittagong. Post-graduate courses are certified by BSMMU. There are some diploma courses are also running in various disciplines. There is a large hospital adjacent to the College named Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The college is situated in between Chawkbazar and Probortok circle.

CMC is one of the best Medical Colleges in Bangladesh to develop clinical knowledge and surgical skills. It has also got research projects[5] in various specialities, like 'Malaria Research Project' which runs in cooperation with University of Oxford.
