University of Chittagong

University of Chittagong (Bengali: চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a public research university with multidisciplinary faculties situated across a 2110-acre hilly landmass in Fatehpur Union of Hathazari Upazila, 22 kilometres north of Chittagong city of Bangladesh. This university has the largest campus among Bangladeshi universities. The academic activities of the university formally began on 18 November 1966. It has about 24,000 students and more than 1000 faculty members.[3]

Location

University of Chittagong is located in Fatehpur Union, Hathazari Upazila about 22 kilometres north[2] of the Chittagong city around 1754 acres of hilly and flat land.[4]

History

Chittagong University in 1970.

Chittagong University was founded on 3 December 1965 by Fazlul Qadir Chaudhry in Chittagong City.[5] He was one of the main facilitators for the demand of the university.[4]

Current vice-chancellor

On June 3, 2019, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of Bangladesh appointed Dr. Shirin Akhter as the 18th VC of the university temporarily on a routine duty. Her official appointment as VC was confirmed on November 4, 2019 by the President, as well as the chancellor of CU, Mohammad Abdul Hamid. She is the first female VC in the history of University of Chittagong. She was born at Eid Gao in Cox's Bazar on May 1, 1956. She completed her S.S.C from Cox'sbazar Government Girls School in 1973 and H.S.C from Chittagong Government Women's College in 1975. She completed her B.A and M.A on Bengali Language and Literature from the University of Chittagong in 1978 and 1981 respectively. Prof. Shirin Akhter joined the university as a lecturer of Bangla Department in 1996 after completing her PhD from Jadavpur University in India. She has also acted as the Pro-VC of the University from March 28, 2016 to November 4, 2019.

Facilities

Library

The Chittagong University Library is situated on the university campus, and since 1990, has been housed in its own building of 56,700 square feet. The library is managed by a 14-member Library Committee. The library collection consists of about 350,000 books and over 40,000 bound journals.[7]

Chittagong University Museum

The Chittagong University Museum was established on 14 June 1973. The museum started with a collection of artifacts from the History Department. It collected fossils from Nasirabad hills. The museum build up a collection of historical artifacts and painting.[8][9]
