Vishnu Savara (born 1 June 1950) is a leader of the Indian Bharatiya Janata Party. His parents belong to a family of farmers residing in the village of Galtare in Wada, a tehsil in Palghar district.[1] Savara, a cabinet minister for tribal development[2] in the government of Maharashtra,[3][4] was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Wada constituency in 1990, 1995, 1999, and 2004.[5] In 2009, after delimitation, he won the Bhiwandi Rural Vidhan Sabha election.[6] In the 2014 assembly election, Savara won the Vikramgad Vidhan Sabha seat.[6]

Early life and education

Savara completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1973, and was a senior cashier at Dairy Project Dapchari-Dahanu from 1973 to 1976. In 1976, he was hired by the State Bank of India after a competitive examination and worked in Boisar, Talasari from 1976 to 1980.

Political career

Since university, Savara has been a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In 1980, he left the State Bank of India to work for the BJP. That year, Savara was the BJP candidate for the Wada Maharashtra Legislative Assembly constituency[7] (now Bhiwandi Rural). He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Wada or Bhiwandi Rural in 1990, 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2009, and in 2014 for Vikramgad.

Tribal-area development

Savara participated the following projects for people living below the poverty line in tribal areas:

  • The Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act 1996 (PESA), allocating five percent of the tribal-government budget to the 2,835 gram panchayats in scheduled areas.
  • E Scholarship for tribal students
  • Clean India – Residence-School cleaning programme
  • Toll-free help line for tribal youth
  • Issuing online Caste Verification Certificates (CVC) to tribal people
  • Bandhkam Vayvasthapan Kaksha – Government hostel and residential school
  • Centralized kitchen for hostel students at Kambalgaon (Palghar) and Mundegaon (Nashik)
  • Krida Prabodhini Yojna – to encourage participation in sports

Initiatives

  • Implementation of a scheme, funded by the central government in cooperation with the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA), for a 1,000-village (in Gadhchiroli, Palghar and Pune) climate-smart village project
  • Project planning for water management and climate-smart agriculture by the government of Maharashtra with the assistance of Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands
  • Lighting in remote areas through Saur Urja Prakalp
  • Scholarships and consideration of a five-percent bonus to students participating in state-level sports
  • The Warli Aadivasi Hut Project, on a six-acre site in Manor, to maintain and publicise tribal art and culture
