UniFi (stylized as unifi, the "Fi" is an abbreviation of fibre optics) is a service by Telekom Malaysia, offering Internet access, VoIP and IPTV to residential and business customers in Malaysia through an optical fiber network via Fiber to the Home (FTTH) for individual housing units and VDSL2 for multi-story buildings.

Formerly called the VIP (Voice, Internet, Phone) plan, the residential package was renamed as Advance plan, Pro plan, and Lite plan, which provides video or IP Television, Internet Access, and phone service.

Background

Initiated and signed in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB (High-Speed Broadband) project is a PPP agreement between TM and the government to develop next generation HSBB infrastructure and services. TM invested RM8.9 billion and the government invested RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.

unifi was officially launched on 24 March 2010. Other wireless broadband providers include P1 (rebranded as webe on 29 April 2016 and subsequently unifi Mobile) and YTL, which launched its WiMax wireless broadband in November 2010.

The HSBB project, which is the flagship of the National Broadband Initiative (NBI), is hoped to help Malaysia catch up with countries such as Japan, Korea and Singapore, which have high speed broadband at relatively low prices.

The rollout of Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) High Speed Broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi, continues to be on track with service availability now expanded to an additional 48 areas nationwide, bringing the total of Premises passed to

More than 750,000 premises were being supplied at the end of 2010, with a target of 1.3 million by the end of 2012 at the end of the first phase of the HSBB project rollout.

On 12 July 2018, TM unveiled the third generation of unifi plan, called the unifi Turbo and unifi Basic plan.[1][2] The unifi Turbo plan consist of 100Mbit/s, 300Mbit/s, 500Mbit/s and 800Mbit/s packages. Existing first (VIP) and second generation unifi users will be upgraded to the third generation packages free of charge and without contract extension or renewal. Meanwhile, the unifi Basic plan comes with 30Mbit/s download speed and is targeted toward household with income less than RM4500 per month.[3][4][5] Household will need to be verified for its eligibility for the plan during sign up.[6]

General

unifi set different prices to customers by type of use (Residential or Business) and download and upload speeds.

Each unifi client is given a dynamic IP address, a WiFi modem router, Internet Protocol Television including linear broadcast channels (Standard Definition and High Definition), interactive television and video-on-demand (through a Set Top Box), DECT phone including free calls to all TM landlines throughout the country, and a fixed rate of 10 cents per minute for calls to non-TM fixed-line and mobile phones throughout the country.

Criticism

When unifi was initially introduced in year 2010 with the VIP plan, there have been complaints by consumers on social media as there is usage quota set on the plans, even though the quota is said to be 'unlimited until further notice' by TM. The first generation unifi plan was also criticized for being overpriced and slower compared to other fiber service provider in neighboring ASEAN nations. This is partially due to the mandatory inclusion of unifi TV in all unifi packages, and there are no a la carte packages available without the extra services.

Besides that, TM is also regularly criticized over its slow unifi rollout speed. Since its debut in 2009, it has only covered a very limited area in larger towns in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and coverage in the east coast while the coverage in Sarawak and Sabah (Borneo Malaysia) is still appalling.
