History

Until the 10th century, Schoppernau seems to have been a pristine jungle. This situation lasted throughout the Middle Ages. Schoppernau and Au were the last villages to be populated in the Bregenzerwald. In the beginning, Schoppernau was probably used as pasture for sheep, at least the name ("Schappernouw" = Schafau) indicates. Due to the geographical proximity, Schoppernau and Au developed in a similar way.

Coat of arms

The Schoppernau coat of arms has been in use since 12 March 1930. It is red with a silver summit in the background. In the middle there is a green uprooted spruce, to the left and right of it there are two silver cow bells. It has a bronze frame.

Culture

Schoppernau is part of the Bregenzerwald Umgang (literally "Bregenz forest walk"). The walk shows the design of 12 traditionally built villages in the Bregenz Forest. By means of the landscape, public buildings, houses and everyday objects, walkers can experience the typical Bregenzerwälder architecture style through the ages. Some of the nine buildings that were chosen for the walking path in Schoppernau are: Bergkäserei Schoppernau, farmhouses, an old sawmill, the fire department, and the primary school.

The 19th century half-timbered farmhouse in Schoppernau: Many farmhouses in the Bregenz Forest are so-called half-timbered houses with overlaid beams and sealed with moss.

The Franz Michael Feldermuseum shows the life and work of the author, farmer and social reformer Franz Michael Felder. He is considered to be one of the most famous historical personalities of the Bregenzerwald.

The parish church Schoppernau was built in 1710 by the architect Johann Brenner von Gräsalp (1664-1749). In 1838, an organ was installed. In 1917, all four church bells had to be delivered because of World War I.
