Thomas Sanders (born April 24, 1989) is an American singer, actor, scriptwriter and internet personality made famous by Vine and YouTube. He is best known for his Vine career, which lasted from April 2013 until the social media was shut down by Twitter in January 2017.[4] After the shutdown of Vine, he continued making videos, long ones on YouTube, and shorter ones in the style of Vine on Instagram and Twitter. His work consists of comedy sketches, pranks, stories, singing and social justice.

Sanders is mainly known for the Vine series Narrating People's Lives, also known as Storytime, and the YouTube series Sanders Sides. He managed to amass over 7.4 billion loops and 8.3 million followers on Vine,[5] making his career one of the most successful in this social media's short history. On YouTube, he has 2.9 million subscribers as of October 2018. Sanders has won two Shorty Awards[6][7] and one Streamy Award,[8] to best Viner and best YouTube comedian, and has been nominated for a Teen Choice Award[9] to "Choice Viner" among other recognitions.

As a singer, Sanders has published one EP in 2013,[10][11] one album in 2016,[12] and several singles from 2017[13] onwards.[14][15] He has a career in musical theater in his native Florida since his teenage years, starring in regional productions of shows like Into the Woods,[16] Singin' in the Rain,[17][18] Anything Goes,[19] The Producers[20] Les Misérables[21] and Heathers: The Musical[22][23] among others, and starring in a tour through 17 cities in the USA and Canada with his own stage musical, Ultimate Storytime, based on his Vine series.[24][25][26][27] In 2017, he has made a guest appearance on the Disney Channel show Bizaardvark[28][29] and co-hosted a special episode of the Disney XD show Walk the Prank.[30]

Personal life

Thomas Sanders was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida[31] and still lives there today. His great-grandfather on his mother’s side was born in Ireland and he's always shown pride of his Irish roots, considering himself half Irish and having relatives in Ireland.[32] Sanders' father was a teacher for decades.[33] Sanders' parents had four boys, Patrick, Christian, Thomas and Shea. Thomas is two years older than Shea, and eight years younger than Patrick and Christian.[34] He was raised as a Catholic and considers himself as such, albeit an "open-mind Catholic" as he called himself.[35] Although, as he said, he's been singing his whole life since he was a toddler,[36] he started singing in public when he was in middle school in several choruses. He also took his first steps in acting in middle-school, appearing in several school plays.[37] When he got to high-school, he started combining acting and singing by doing his first roles in musical plays.[38] Later, Sanders combined his studies at the University of Florida (which is located in Gainesville) with community theater, joining the Gainesville Community Playhouse in 2006, where he would do dozens of roles up until 2015. When he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 2011,[39][16] he subsequently combined a daytime job as a manufacturing engineer in an pharmaceutical development company in Alachua[40] with his night-time job in theater, until his success on Vine prompted him to leave that first job and focus on Vine and theater.[31]

After several years of speculations from his viewers about his sexuality, which, during the Vine era, was ambiguously reflected on his work, with some Vines where he had female love interests, others where he had male love interests, and even one where he had both; on June 12, 2017, Sanders came out as gay and clarified that all the times he had portrayed relationships in his videos, whatever the orientation, he was only playing characters. Sanders said that, although he was "out way before Vine" and he wouldn't have minded going out more clearly earlier, as he answered honestly to anyone who asked him about that, he did not consider showing his real life sexuality on Vine, because he did not consider it relevant for his comedy, preferring instead to "switch roles" any time he had the chance. He also couldn't expand on the subject due to Vine limitations and time constraints, and mentioned in that sense that the YouTube platform gave him more freedom to step out of character and talk more freely about himself.[41] Still after coming out, lots of viewers kept on speculating about his hypothetical bisexuality, and they still do from time to time in his different social media platforms, so he had to clarify many more times that any time he had played any "sexuality that is attracted to women" he was playing characters, making clear again that he was gay, not bisexual,[42] and not "bi-curious",[43] only gay.[44]

Career

Vine and Sanders Shorts

Thomas Sanders made his debut on Vine as "Foster_Dawg", named after his first dog, Foster,[45] on April 14, 2013, when a friend named Antonio showed him the Vine app.[46] An impression of Stewie Griffin, from Family Guy, in a drive-thru, was his first Vine to go viral, leading to continued success on the app.[31] He later rebranded his channel to "Thomas Sanders". His channel reached 1 million followers on Vine in October 2013.[31] His biggest success on Vine was the Narrating People's Lives series, also known as Storytime, where he approached random strangers, comically narrated what they were doing and showed their reaction.[47][48] Other Vine series he's known for are Disney Pranks with Friends, Pokémon Pranks, Misleading Compliments, Musicals in Real Life, Stewie vs. Herbert (co-starring Taylor Shrum as Herbert) and Shoutout Sunday, among others.[5] By April 2015, Sanders' Vine account had over 5 million followers, which made Thomas Sanders the 17th most followed Viner at the time.[49] On February 24, 2015, Sanders appeared as a guest on The View, on a segment featuring Vine stars, where he was interviewed about his popularity on Vine,[31] and one of his Vines was featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in their section Vine after Vine.[50] When Twitter announced that it was closing Vine down at the end of 2016, Sanders announced that he would continue making Vines until the app's last day.[51] When Vine was shut down on January 17, 2017, Sanders had reached 8.3 million followers.[52]

Thomas Sanders opened his Instagram and Twitter accounts one year before Vine, in 2012, using them at that time to talk about or publish photographs of his work on theater or his daily life. After April 2013, his Vines would usually be published simultaneously on Twitter. Some of his last Vines from 2016 would be released on Instagram too, some of them in extended cuts longer than 6 seconds. After the end of Vine, Sanders continued making short videos in the style of Vine, but slightly longer, from the original 6 seconds to sometimes beyond 1 minute, which he publishes for the first time on his Instagram account, being released simultaneously on his Twitter account like the Vines. Even though the word "shorts" already appeared in his last Vine-only compilation of December 2016, in the title screen,[53] he officially used the term Sanders Shorts for the first time in his January 2017 compilation, where he mixed his last Vines with his first Instagram-only shorts,[54] and Sanders Shorts is the name how his short videos are known nowadays. The Sanders Shorts are later reissued, with different delay times, on the rest of his social media accounts, like Tumblr and Facebook among others. On Instagram, Sanders also posts Instagram Stories that are usually released simultaneously on his Snapchat account. He also encourages his followers, who call themselves "Fanders", to draw fan art inspired on him and his work and send it to him, choosing some of the best examples and releasing weekly Instagram compilations each Friday under the hashtag "FanArtFriday",[31] with "SuperArtSaturday" and "SupremeArtSunday" as alternate hashtags if for some reason the art compilation was published on Saturday or Sunday instead. As of October 2018, He has 2.4 million followers on Instagram.[55]

Sanders has collaborated with viners such as Vincent Marcus,[56] Brandon Calvillo[57] and Amymarie Gaertner,[58] and featured cameos and appearances from people such as Sean Bean,[59] Nicolle Wallace,[60] Stacy London,[61] Nick Pitera (with whom he did a series of Vines, Unexpected Duets),[62] Brizzy Voices,[62] Gabbie Hanna,[63] Tara Strong,[64] E. G. Daily,[65] Dan and Phil,[66] Adam Pascal[67] and the main actors from Hamilton, Teen Titans Go! and Steven Universe,[68] among others. He has also featured appearances from a recurrent cast that usually appeared with him in his Vines, usually friends, sometimes family members, and fellow stage actors, such as Leo the Giant, Taylor Shrum, Brittney Kelly, Michael Tremaine, Jonah Stokes, who later changed their name to Joan;[Note 2] were known as Jonah for most of Sanders' Vine career, up until November 2016, when they started being credited as Joan.</ref>, Terrence Williams Jr., Nicole Visco, Sami Gresham, Dominic Goldberg, Valerie Torres-Rosario, "That Kenny Guy", Talyn, Susan Shrum, Claudia Garcia, and many others.

Thomas Sanders made his first footsteps online long before Vine, as an anonymous YouTube video editor back in 2007, when he was 18 years old, making AMVs using Kingdom Hearts footage, under the username Roxas424, using the old Windows Movie Maker as his editing tool.[69] Five of these videos, where Sanders never revealed his face or identity, even though he mentioned in the descriptions some of his early theater work, like him starring in a stage production of High School Musical,[70] are still available as of 2018 in that YouTube channel, although the channel, which barely has a few thousands of views as of 2018, has had no kind of activity ever since 2007, and has remained mostly in obscurity until Sanders revealed at the end of 2016 he was the maker of these videos while doing a YouTube collaboration in Ben J. Pierce's channel.[69] Sanders later confirmed in May 2018 the exact location of that channel when asked in his own official Twitter account.[71]

Sanders opened his official YouTube account on March 15, 2009.[72] There are no registers nowadays of when he published his first YouTube video there, or how many videos he did publish between 2009 and 2014. The oldest video that is available as of 2018 was published on May 1, 2013, and it is a cover of the then viral "Cup Song".[73] There are references in Sanders' official Twitter account in messages from the second half of 2013 that he had uploaded several YouTube videos by that time, mostly consisting of full covers of songs,[74] but of all of them, only two YouTube covers from 2013 and one of 2014 remain available as of 2018. Any YouTube video published before October 2014 was subsequently deleted except the mentioned and three skits in the style of Vine but longer than 6 seconds. In October 2014, when he already was established as a Vine star with several million followers there, he announced the "official" debut of his YouTube channel.[75] He started including an opening with a title sequence and an intro song before each video, and started publishing monthly compilations of his Vines, vlogs where he talked about various topics, many times about his experiences in theater, and Q&A's answering questions from his followers sent to him both through Vine and Twitter.[76] He had his first YouTube collaborations throughout 2015, consisting on pranks, games and challenges. Up until 2014, his subscriber count grew at a lower rate, with around 80,000 subscribers at the end of that year.[77] From that date, his user count growth started progressively accelerating, having 200,000 subscribers by April 2015[76] and more than 700,000 subscribers at the end of 2015.[78]

From the second half of 2016, at the same time his Vine activity got slightly diminished following Twitter's announcement of Vine's forthcoming closedown, Sanders announced he would be focusing on his YouTube content from then on. This way, he started publishing more frequent YouTube videos in more diverse formats. He retained games and challenges and also the monthly Vine, later Sanders Shorts compilations, but also included song performances, both solo and in duets, culture and social justice debates with a special support for LGBTQ+ issues or racial and gender equality topics among others; short films, comedy sketches, web series like Sanders Sides and Cartoon Therapy, shows with participation from the audience like Real or Fake Anime or Voices of Unreason and occasional live broadcasts, among other formats. Traditional vlogs, though not completely phased out, went through long hiatuses between entries and were largely replaced by Sanders Sides as a way of talking about topics and issues with his audience. Sanders' YouTube account surpassed 1 million subscribers around August 2016,[3] and 2 millions in July 2017.[79] As of October 2018, his channel has 2.9 million subscribers.[80] In September 2018, Sanders announced the creation of a second YouTube channel, with the provisional name "Secret Channel". He debuted it with a single teaser video, where he didn't disclose what this "secret channel" would contain.[81]

Sanders and his Vines were the main theme of reaction on an episode of the Fine Brothers' YouTube show Kids React in April 2015,[82] and a year later, in October 2016, he made several guest appearances as a reactor himself on the Fine Brothers show YouTubers React.[83] Among others, he has collaborated with Hannah Hart (among other times, on an episode of My Drunk Kitchen),[84] Nathan Zed,[85] Anthony Padilla,[86] Brizzy Voices,[87] Lilly Singh,[88] Jon Cozart,[89] Grace Helbig,[90] Gabe Erwin,[91] Smosh,[92] Michaela Dietz,[93] Meghan Tonjes,[94] Gabbie Hanna,[95] The Gregory Brothers,[96] dodie[97] and Ben J. Pierce,[98] as well as, just like on Vine, Joan, Talyn, Dominic Goldberg and the rest of Sanders' friends and fellow stage actors.

Since October 19, 2016, Thomas Sanders runs on YouTube a web series, Sanders Sides, co-written with Joan,[99] in which he discusses personal or existential issues with four main characters, collectively known as the titular "Sanders Sides". On the series, the Sanders Sides are "physical mental projections" of Thomas' mind,[100] and represent different aspects of Thomas'[Note 3] one and only personality. Sanders repeatedly made this clear as he saw some viewers calling them "personalities", as if Thomas was portrayed having dissociative identity disorder, which is something different to what Sanders wants to portray on the series, comparing the series instead to Inside Out, a movie which Sanders claims as an inspiration for Sanders Sides.[101] Sanders Sides consists of two seasons with a total as of October 2018 of 26 episodes released on a variable periodicity, but generally, barring occasional longer hiatuses, on a fortnightly to monthly average basis. Season 1 has 19 episodes released from October 19, 2016 to July 19, 2017. Season 2 began on September 1, 2017 and as of October 2018, it has 7 episodes.[102] The Sanders Sides are usually all played by Sanders himself, even though on occasion they have also been played by Joan, Valerie Torres-Rosario, Terrence Williams Jr. and Talyn.[103] Stokes and Talyn also collaborate extensively with Sanders on the production of the series, researching for the main topics of each episode, making props, decorating sets, designing and hand sewing some pieces of costume, doing some of the makeup, and helping with editing and visual effects.[104] Sanders Sides has featured sometimes appearances of guest stars like Lilly Singh[105] or Butch Hartman who, apart from appearing as himself, created an animated sequence exclusively for Sanders Sides where Thomas and his Sides became cartoon characters. Tara Strong, who had already appeared in several Vines and Sanders Shorts, also made a voice cameo in Hartman's episode.[106]

On the plot of the series, Thomas starts each episode as an ordinary vlog about a certain topic or dilemma. Sometimes he is interrupted by the Sanders Sides who pop up before him, and sometimes Thomas summons them for help. Anyway, this starts a debate where each of the Sides offers his point of view according to the personality trait he represents, until they all reach a conclusion, both for Thomas and for the viewers. All of this is combined with gags and comical, dramatic or thrilling moments that happen between Thomas and the Sides. Some of the dilemmas covered by the series have been, among others, how to bring down anxiety,[105] things and tricks to learn to get a better adulthood,[107] how to approach someone romantically,[108] when to listen to the mind or the heart in our daily life,[109] cognitive distortions and ways to avoid them,[110] causes and solutions for procrastination,[111] how becoming an adult doesn't mean giving up the inner child completely,[112] dealing with changes in life,[113] how anxiety is necessary in the right doses for human life,[114][115] fitting in in life,[116] ways to deal with a romantic breakup,[117][118] and ways and consequences of lying.[119]

The Sanders Sides' names are Logan,[120] Patton,[121] Prince Roman[122] and Virgil,[123] although at the beginning they were known respectively as Logic, Morality or Dad, Creativity or Princey, and Anxiety until they revealed their names one by one. Logan is Thomas' logical thinking, his intelligence, and his acquired knowledge. He has the appearance of a high school teacher, wearing a black polo shirt, a blue necktie and black Warby Parker glasses. He is based on the concept of Logos by Aristotle, one of the three modes of persuasion which appeals to logic and reasoning.[124] Patton is Thomas' morality, his sense of right and wrong, his emotions, his feelings and his inner child. He has the appearance of the typical American family dad, wearing a blue polo shirt, a cardigan tied over his shoulders and black glasses, the same Warby Parker glasses Logan sports. He is based on the concept of Pathos, also by Aristotle, another of the three modes of persuasion, this one appealing to emotions.[125] Roman is Thomas' creativity, his fancifulness, his hopes and dreams, his romanticism and his love for singing. He has the appearance of a fairytale Disney prince, wearing a white 19th-century royal suit with a golden ornament on a shoulder and a red stripe crossing the chest, and sometimes he sports a katana as his weapon of choice. He is based on the concept of both romanticism for romance and Romanticism, the artistic movement involving tales of knights and princesses as one of its themes.[126] Finally, Virgil is Thomas' anxiety, his fears, his fight or flight reflexes and his survival instinct. He sports the appearance of an emo teenager, wearing a black shirt, a dark gray hoodie, his hair all over his face and eyeshadow under his eyes. His name is based on the Latin name Vergilius which, although it is of unknown meaning, experts theorize it derives from "vigil" or "vigilant", and also on the Roman poet Virgil, who appears as a character on Dante's Inferno, a video game based on Dante's Divine Comedy, where he escorts Dante through the Underworld.[127]

Logan, as Thomas' logic, always sports a serious, over-analytic attitude, and has difficulty to process emotions, double meaning expressions and slang words, usually taking things the others tell him too literally, and needing the use of vocabulary cards where he writes their multiple meanings to be able to follow up in conversations.[128] Patton, as his morality, is portrayed as a father, something ironic as, since he also represents Thomas' inner child, he is portrayed with the mind of a pure, playful and easily distracted kid in spite of being the father in the team.[129] He is also portrayed with a love for dad jokes, something that Logan cannot stand. He is portrayed as deeply emotional and is the one among the Sides who loves Virgil more, to the point of unilaterally adopting him as his "dark strange son".[130][131] Roman, as Thomas' creativity and fancifulness, is always prone to unrealistic behavior and, as he both represents Thomas' masculinity and femininity, he usually talks with a theatrical masculine voice, but screams like a woman when suddenly scared (his screaming voice was provided by Talyn),[132] and sometimes shows a subtle effeminate voice and likes things that society usually consider feminine.[133] Since he also represents Thomas' ego, he is also portrayed as having quite a narcissistic personality, but constantly working to rein himself in.[134] Virgil, as Thomas' anxiety, acts as the antagonist in his earlier appearances, as he represents Thomas' negative thinking about himself, later becoming the voice of reason but with a fatalistic attitude. He and Roman are portrayed to have an on and off relationship, where Roman constantly throws insulting nicknames to Virgil and Virgil throws back some at Roman too.[135] In the first season, Virgil is portrayed as feeling isolated and unwanted by the team and is genuinely thankful to Patton for being the only one of the other Sides who accepted him from the beginning.[131] In the second season, after the first-season finale, Virgil still feels like "the odd one out", but struggles to fit in with the others, and the others try their best in making Virgil feel welcome.[136]

Sanders Sides is a spin-off from the Vine/Sanders Shorts series, as Patton, Roman and Logan are inspired on characters that had previously debuted on Vine in 2014, the Dad Guy, the Prince Guy and the Teacher Guy respectively (these names, as noted above, were also used on Sanders Sides as nicknames, dropping the "Guy" suffix, although the Teacher nickname has been far less used than the others and the Prince nickname was changed to Princey). There, each Guy has their own Vine series. Dad Guy's series began on January 15, 2014,[137] Prince Guy's series began on June 4, 2014,[138] and Teacher Guy's series began on November 3, 2014,[139] and all these series are still running on Sanders Shorts. An Anxiety Guy inspired on Virgil has also occasionally appeared on Vine[140] and Sanders Shorts,[141] but Virgil was originally created for Sanders Sides. The Anxiety Guy does not have a series of his own and has always appeared as secondary character in the Prince Guy's series or in Sleep's series. In this later appearance, Thomas Sanders made clear that the Sanders Shorts "Guys" are independent of the Sanders Sides characters and only share physical appearance, but there is no shared canonicity between the Sanders Shorts universe and the Sanders Sides universe.[142] In the first episodes of Sanders Sides, Logan, Roman and Patton exhibit personality traits inherited from their Sanders Shorts counterparts, like Logan being less serious and much happier than what he would be; Roman sporting a completely theatrical masculine voice all the time with no sign of subtle effeminacy in his voice, sporting instead a thick foreign accent later gone; and Patton acting less like a child and more like a goofy adult.[143] They would evolve as the series went on. However, among the Sides, Virgil is the one that has the most drastic evolution. He starts as an evil antagonistic figure that enjoys the anxiety he inflicts upon Thomas, and slowly softens up, leaving his earlier menacing behavior, until he reveals he really cares about Thomas' well being and he only intends to protect him,[144] thus being accepted by the group. This, in Sanders' words, was a symbol of Thomas first rejecting then slowly accepting his anxiety as a part of himself.[145]

On the first episode of Season 2, apart from a change on the opening song and a new logo specifically designed for Sanders Sides, there was a slight redesign of the characters, who started wearing new costumes.[116] All the Sanders Sides, just like Thomas Sanders himself, start sporting purple hair. Logan's polo shirt was replaced for an even blacker shirt and the necktie was decorated with blue stripes. Patton at first saw little changes, apart from occasionally tying over his shoulders his whole pajama cat onesie for short amounts of time, but in the third episode he replaced his old cardigan on his shoulders for a cat hoodie also tied to his shoulders that was given to him in the story as a present by Logan. Roman replaced his suit for a new more stylized one, similar in style, but with golden ornaments both in the chest and in both shoulders and sleeves, a longer neck, and the red stripe tied forming a ribbon in his left hip. Virgil's new costume was the one that saw the biggest changes. He had a torn purple shirt, and the hoodie was black in the outside and purple in the inside with patches of purple checkered fabric sewed on the outside with golden thread costures. Virgil's new costume was designed, dyed and hand sewn by Talyn and Joan themselves using existing clothes and pieces of fabric.[116] Virgil's makeup was also updated, as his previous eyeshadow, which in reality was done with a gray eyeliner pencil by Sanders himself, was replaced by a darker proper eyeshadow, but that change had already happened in the last episode of season 1, when Talyn first stepped in as a makeup artist. With the change, the Sanders Sides costumes started sporting individual logos that identified them. Logan's logo consists on a white brain with black glasses, Patton's logo consists on a white heart with a smile and black glasses, Roman's logo is a medieval-like heraldic shield that sports a gules background with a castle surrounded by a pit and a sun drawn on it in Or, and Virgil's logo consists on a purple cloud with a lightning bolt coming out of it. Except Roman, whose logo appears on both his sleeves next to his shoulders, all the rest of the logos appear on their left side of their chests.[116] The new logos were officially premiered on a merchandising event that Sanders hosted on Broadway, New York, on August 19 and 20, 2017.[146] These redesigned costumes are seen only on the Sanders Sides series. The Sanders Shorts Guys keep wearing the season 1 costumes which they've always used since their first appearances on Vine, reinforcing the fact stated by Sanders that the Sanders Sides and the "Sanders Guys" are independent characters.[142]

It had already been hinted just at the end of season 1 that there were more Sides within Thomas other than the four main Sides.[147] On February 3, 2018, in the fifth episode of season 2, a new Side finally showed up. He is known as Deceit, and represents both intentional and unintentional lies Thomas tells to himself and the others around him. Deceit hides, and can force the other Sides to hide, any information about Thomas that he, consciously or not, does not want to know, including the existence of the so-called "Dark Sides", the dark aspects of Thomas' personality where Deceit would be one of them. Deceit can assume the shape of any of the Sides, being disguised as Patton the first time he appeared, but when assuming his real form, he wears a 19th-century Victorian inspired costume that reminds of Mr. Hyde, with a bowler hat, a black capelet and bright yellow gloves.[148] The right half of his face looks fairly normal while the left half is snake-like in appearance, having an eye with a yellow iris and slitted pupil, the eyelid of a calloused pink skin, the face from the forehead to the chin being covered in tan greenish scales and a scar that crosses the cheek from the corner of the mouth to the ear. As Joan said in their Tumblr account, the costume and makeup of Deceit were designed by them, while Talyn sewed the capelet themselves and applied the makeup.[149] Deceit is portrayed as a sly character who can tell lies smoothly and confidently, and seems to take some form of pleasure in lying beyond his stated role, which, in the episode, was said to be a mechanism of self-preservation. Although Deceit is able to tell the truth on his own will or when it accidentally slips out of his mouth, and he can mix truths with lies to reinforce the lies, most of the time, everything he willingly says is a lie. Whether the truth behind a given lie Deceit says is believable or not depends on the situation and the question that was asked, relying more on what Thomas thinks it's true about himself in the given moment rather than what it really is.[150]

Theater

Apart from his Internet-based career, Sanders has worked in musical theater since he was a teenager. He debuted when he was in seventh grade, around 2002, playing Macduff in a middle school production of Macbeth,[151] and his first role in a musical was as Prospero in Return to the Forbidden Planet, during high school in the mid 2000s.[152] He then performed in local productions for Buchholz High School and Gainesville High School, and in 2006 he debuted in the Gainesville Community Playhouse in a production of Beauty and the Beast.[153][31] In the Gainesville Community Playhouse, among many other roles, he played Ko-Ko in Hot Mikado (2007),[154] Cornelius Hackl in Hello Dolly! (2008),[155] Don Lockwood in Singin' in the Rain (2009),[17][18] Leo Bloom in The Producers (2010),[20] Billy Crocker in Anything Goes (2011),[19] Phil Davis in White Christmas (2012),[156] The Wolf and Cinderella's Prince in Into the Woods (2014),[16] and Inspector Javert in Les Misérables (2014).[21] Sanders received three Golden Apple Awards, a local award from the Gainesville Community Playhouse, to the best actor in a musical, for Hot Mikado in 2007,[157] for The Producers in 2010[158] and for Anything Goes in 2011.[159] Other roles include Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, Troy Bolton in High School Musical and Slightly Soiled in Peter Pan.[152] In 2015, Sanders did his first professional theater work as J.D. in Heathers: The Musical, in a production performed in Orlando.[23] From August 8 to September 2, 2016, Sanders went on a stage musical tour, Ultimate Storytime, written by Sanders with songs composed by Jacob Fjeldheim, and based on his Vine series Narrating People's Lives, performing in 17 cities in the USA and Canada, including Toronto and New York City.[24][25][26][27]

Writing for The Gainesville Sun, critic Arline Greer said about Singing in the Rain: "Thomas Sanders is on stage in [Gene] Kelly's place, willingly and eagerly putting himself through Kelly's iconic paces. Your enjoyment of Sanders' performance and of the production in general depends a lot on your willingness to put aside memories of what some have called one of Hollywood's greatest musical motion pictures. If it's indelibly etched in your brain, you may have trouble."[18] Writing about The Producers, the same critic said: "Here, in another stroke of brilliant casting, Thomas Sanders plays the timid, hysterical Bloom, who sings, 'I Wanna Be a Producer' with all the charm of a starry-eyed Josh Groban."[20] Writing for The Gainesville Sun about Les Misérables, critic Ron Cunningham said: "And Thomas Sanders — a comic standout in "Into the Woods" — is grim as death in his portrayal of Javert, the self-righteous police inspector who hounds Valjean without mercy."[21] Writing for Orlando Sentinel about Heathers: The Musical, critic Mathew J. Palmer said: "Thomas Sanders, who has a huge Internet following for his work on YouTube and Vine, is a charismatic J.D., but as a couple [with his co-star Nicole Visco] they don't generate much heat", remarking also they both were "fine singers", even though some "momentary pitch issues" appeared throughout the cast on the opening night.[22] Writing for Broadway World about Heathers, Matt Tamanini said: "As J.D., Sanders is a lot of fun, in a homicidal sort of way. Giving just enough Christian Slater for it to still be considered homage, he finds a way to make his teenage killer more understandable than the film version. Additionally, he has a really nice baritone voice, and adds in extra shots of humor whenever possible."[160]

Music

Though often critics, as mentioned above, classified Sanders as a baritone,[160] Thomas considers himself a bass singer.[161] He has sung multiple times in his Vines and YouTube videos, as well as in his Tumblr, Snapchat and the rest of his social media accounts. He has performed songs in a wide variety of genres, but he has personally showed a preference towards jazz music, mentioning Nat King Cole as one of his favorite singers.[162] He has also sung duets with dodie, Jon Cozart, Ben J. Pierce, Deedee Magno Hall, Adam Pascal, AJ Rafael and others. One of these duets, the song "R.I.P. Vine: A Song", performed with Jon Cozart in December 2016, was nominated for a Streamy Award to the best collaboration.[163] He released his first EP on Bandcamp on December 21, 2013, comprising Christmas songs and titled Merry Christmas.[10][11] In 2016, he released the soundtrack of his Ultimate Storytime stage musical, recorded alongside his co-stars, Terrence Williams Jr., Nicole Visco, Jay Harper (also known as JayIsJo) and Leo Anderson (also known as Leo the Giant).[12] On July 22, 2017, Sanders released on YouTube a new original song titled "The Things We Used to Share",[164] with words and music by Joan and piano accompaniment by AJ Rafael, inspired on real events in Sanders' life, which became available to stream and download on iTunes and Spotify on July 27.[13] It was followed by more singles along 2018, solo or in duet, and the announcement of a new EP.[165]

Television

On January 27, 2017, Thomas Sanders guest starred in the Disney Channel show Bizaardvark, in the last episode of the first season, titled "In Your Space!", where he portrayed the titular reality web show's host Ian Finkelman.[28][29] He also co-hosted a special episode of Walk the Prank, titled "Talk the Prank with Thomas Sanders and David Lopez", which was aired on Disney XD on March 20, 2017.[30]
