Gabrielle Jeannette Hanna (born February 7, 1991) is an American YouTuber, Viner, author, comedian, actress, and singer-songwriter. She started her career on the popular streaming service, Vine. She has since risen to fame through YouTube, gaining over 6,000,000 subscribers. In April 2018, she was nominated for an IHeartRadio Social Star Award. Prior to being nominated, she released a poetry book titled Adultolescence. Hanna has also pursued a musical career, releasing five singles as of 2018, her first entitled "Out Loud" in 2017. Also in 2017, Hanna starred in Joey Graceffa's YouTube Red series, Escape the Night, as herself portraying a Vaudevillian during the Victorian era.

Early life

Hanna was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania and has six siblings. Hanna is of Lebanese, French, and Polish descent.[1]

She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in psychology and communications. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.[2]

Before starting on Vine, Hanna worked as a bartender in Indiana, Pennsylvania, before moving to Ohio for another job and then eventually to Los Angeles, California to pursue an acting career and focus on her role as a social media influencer.

Career

2013–2016: Vine and YouTube success

Hanna began uploading skits to Vine in late 2013, and later gained recognition for her comedy videos on the Vine app, where she accumulated just under five million followers.[3] In 2014, she also set up her YouTube channel, Gabbie Hanna (formerly titled The Gabbie Show), which featured storytime videos. Her channel has acquired over 6 million subscribers and over 700 million views.[4] In 2015, she competed on and won the fourth season of the dance competition web-series Dance Showdown with Matt Steffanina as her partner.[5]

After graduating college, Hanna moved to Los Angeles, California to work with internet media company Buzzfeed. Hanna eventually left the company to focus on her YouTube and Vine platforms. She later created a second YouTube channel, The Gabbie Vlogs, which has gained over 1.6 million subscribers and 150 million views.[4][6] In 2016, Vine was shut down, and Hanna subsequently focused on YouTube.[7]

In late 2016, Hanna joined the lip sync tour Drop the Mic, alongside other YouTubers.[8]

2017: Acting, debut musical releases, and Adultolescence

Her debut book, Adultolescence, was released on September 19, 2017. The book chronicles Hanna's struggles throughout her life through a series of poems. Hanna promoted the book with a tour from September 19 to 27 in eight US cities.[9] Hanna also released the single "Out Loud" on September 6, 2017 to promote Adultolescence.[10][11] The single reached #3 on the US iTunes charts.[12] The official music video for the single was released in October 2017. Hanna later announced plans to release an album.[13] Her second single, "Satellite" was released on November 21, 2017.

In 2017, the Talent Agency CAA signed Hanna, and she joined the social media team of MTV the same year. She hosted backstage for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and co-hosted the revival of Total Request Live in October of the same year.[14][15] In 2017, Hanna joined the main cast of web series Escape the Night as 'the Vaudevillian' and appeared in seven episodes.[16][17] Hanna previously had a small role as Lindsey in Laid in America.[18]

2018–present: Increasing public image and This Time Next Year

In January 2018, The Fine Bros posted a YouTube video of teenagers reacting to Hanna and her content. She was also nominated for YouTuber of the Year in the 10th Annual Shorty Awards and for the Social Star Award by iHeartRadio at the 2018 ceremony.[19]

On August 1, 2018, Hanna released a music video on her YouTube channel and accompanying single entitled "Roast Yourself" which spoke out on how social media creators live. At the end of this video, Hanna announced the release of her single "Honestly" on August 15. On August 14, The Fine Bros posted a YouTube video of other YouTube creators reacting to and commenting on the music video.[20]

Hanna released the singles "Honestly" and "Honestly (Encore)" on August 15, 2018.
