Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are Android smartphones from the Google Pixel product line. They were announced on October 9, 2018, and they will be released on October 18, 2018 in the United States, and November 1, 2018 in other parts of the world.[4] They are the successors to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.[5][6]

Specifications

Design

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL come in three colors: ‘Just Black’ (all black), ‘Clearly White’ (white with a mint green power button), and ‘Not Pink’ (pink, with an orange power button).[7] The Pixel 3's bezels are reduced greatly from the Pixel 2, which was criticized for its large bezels. However, the Pixel 3 XL has a large notch on its display. This notch was heavily mocked by online users for its large size while still having a large bottom bezel.[8] The notch can be blacked out in developer options.[9][10]

Camera

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL still retain the 12 megapixel single camera setup at the rear but add new photography features[11][12], as well as a second wide-angle selfie camera. Some of these features include:

  • Top Shot - automatically picks the best shots
  • Night Sight - improves low light performance with no flash
  • Group Selfie Cam - second front camera which allows for a wide angle shot[12]
  • Google Lens[13] - recognizes objects and things seen on the Pixel 3's and Pixel 3 XL's camera

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL use a separate chip called the Pixel Visual Core to achieve their artificial intelligence camera capabilities.[12]

Software

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL come preinstalled with stock Android 9 Pie. Both phones get 3 years of software updates and security updates guaranteed by Google.

Hardware

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL come with a Snapdragon 845 and 4 GB of RAM; and 64 or 128 GB of internal storage. Both phones feature glass backs and wireless charging, which are firsts for the Pixel range. They also feature front-firing stereo speakers and no 3.5 mm headphone jack, like the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Both phones also use a USB-C connection for charging and connecting other accessories.[14] Both phones also contain Active Edge, which debuted with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.[12]

The phones improve upon the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL with an IP68 dust and water resistance instead of IP67.[15]

Reception

The Pixel 3 XL was heavily criticized for its notch implementation.[16][17][18]
