The Minister of Defence of Albania (Albanian: Ministri i Mbrojtjes së Shqipërisë), officially styled the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Albania (Albanian: Ministri i Mbrojtjes të Republikes së Shqipërisë), is the Defence Minister of Albania, with responsibility for co-ordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the Cabinet of Albania relating directly to national security and the Military of Albania.

The President of Albania is the commander-in-chief of the military and appoints and relieves military commanders of duty, conforming to applicable legislation. In times of peace, the duties are executed through the Defence Minister.[3] The main responsibilities of the Defence Minister are to prevent armed conflicts and war, to safeguard the sovereignty of Albania and integrity of Albanian territory and to promote global peace and stability. He or she is obligatory to follows the directions given by the President of Albania and the decisions of the Parliament.

The current officeholder is Mimi Kodheli of the Socialist Party who was elected on 23 June 2013 and started his first four-year-term on 15 September 2013.[4] She is the first female holder of this office.[5][6]

Officeholders

Since the inception of the Fourth Republic and the fall of communism in the country, fourteen individuals have occupied the post. The shortest-serving minister was Luan Rama, between February 2002 to July 2002. The longest-serving Defence Minister was Safet Zhulali, who held the premiership continuously from 13 April 1992 to 11 March 1997.
