This is a list of earthquakes in 1929. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Several large events occurred this year with the main focus of the activity being in Alaska with 4 magnitude 7.0 + events. The deadliest earthquake struck Turkmenistan in May with 3,800 of the years 3,972 deaths in this event. A rare earthquake struck the north Atlantic Ocean in November with the deaths of 28 in Canada being caused by a tsunami. Indonesia was notably quiet this year.

  • Russia A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on January 13 at a depth of 160.0 km.[1]
  • China A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Inner Mongolia, China on January 13 at an unknown depth. Two people died and 100 homes were destroyed.[2]
  • Philippines A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Luzon, Philippines on January 16 at a depth of 25.0 km.[3]
  • Venezuela A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Sucre (state), Venezuela on January 17 at a depth of 10.0 km. Fifty people were killed, 800 more injured, and major damage was caused.[4][5]
  • Myanmar A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Kachin State, Burma on January 19 at an unknown depth. Some damage was caused.[6]
  • United States A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck central Alaska on January 21 at a depth of 35.0 km.[7]
  • Somalia A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the northwest coast of Somalia on January 22 at a depth of 35.0 km.[8]
  • Guatemala A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Guatemala on January 24 at a depth of 15.0 km.[9]

  • Afghanistan A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan on February 1 at a depth of 200.0 km. Fairly heavy damage was sustained, which is unusual considering the depth.[10][11]
  • A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge on February 2 at a depth of 10.0 km.[12]
  • Russia A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on February 6 at a depth of 165.0 km.[13]
  • Guatemala A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Guatemala on February 10 at a depth of 30.0 km.[14]
  • Japan A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on February 14 at a depth of 35.0 km.[15]
  • A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge on February 22 at a depth of 10.0 km.[16]
  • United States A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Alaska Peninsula on February 26 at a depth of 30.0 km.[17]
