The 2017 Jersey City mayoral election was held on November 7, 2017 to elect the Mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey. Incumbent Steven Fulop won re-election to a second term.
The Mayor of Jersey City is elected on a non-partisan basis, where the candidates are not listed by political party. This was the first election held in November after a ballot question in 2016 was approved by voters, moving the election date from May.[1]
Candidates
It was heavily speculated that incumbent Mayor Steven Fulop would run for the Democratic nomination for Governor of New Jersey in 2017, and would possibly not run for re-election as Mayor. However, in a surprise address on September 28, 2016, Fulop announced that he would not run for Governor, and would instead run for re-election, a decision which was reported to have caught even some of his closest allies off guard.[2]
For the first time since 1973, only two candidates filed for election: Fulop and Bill Matsikoudis, corporation counsel under previous Mayor Jerramiah Healy.[3]
