24 Oras (pronounced as Bente Kwatro Oras / lit. 24 Hours) is a Philippine television newscast show broadcast by GMA Network. It premiered on March 15, 2004 replacing Frontpage: Ulat ni Mel Tiangco and worldwide on GMA Pinoy TV. The show is the network's flagship national network news program, and simultaneously broadcast on radio through Super Radyo DZBB 594 in Mega Manila and several of its regional Super Radyo stations nationwide (Super Radyo 909 Palawan, Super Radyo 1323 Iloilo, Super Radyo 999 Cebu and Super Radyo 1125 Davao).

Overview

24 Oras’ set on February 21, 2011

24 Oras premiered its maiden broadcast on March 15, 2004 at 6:15 pm, replacing Frontpage: Ulat ni Mel Tiangco and anchored by Mel Tiangco and Mike Enriquez. Its first headline featured the 2004 Philippine elections, followed by a separate one-on-one live interview with Senator Panfilo Lacson and Actor Fernando Poe Jr. ahead of their proposed tandem meeting. Also in the telecast, TV host Pia Guanio was introduced as the new host for Showbiz Time, later renamed Chika Minute.[1] Weekend editions were aired when it deemed necessary. The show later moved its timeslot to 6:30pm and was extended to 90 minutes.

On December 1, 2005, the coverage by 24 Oras of a siege of Camp Bagong Diwa was mentioned in the best news program category in the Asian Television Awards in Singapore.[2]

The show relaunched in April 17, 2006 with a new graphics package, and a new set with floating large rear projection screens that allow the anchors to virtually "talk" to correspondents in live feeds, also the anchors are doing stand-up news delivery. The studio set was shared by Saksi during that time. PAGASA's Nathaniel Cruz anchors weather news during severe weather conditions.

On August 11, 2008, the show was relaunched again with a multi-million peso studio set using LED, a new desk which is identical to the desk used by CBS Evening News, new graphics, new titles, and its new slogan "Tahanan ng Katotohanan". On April 2010, the show became the home of Vizrt Touchscreen system a real-time broadcast solutions system which is used in the YouScoop segment designed and developed by GMA New Media.[3]

24 Oras became instrumental and controversial on covering the Manila hostage crisis, the authorities ordered a media blackout, but failed, when covering live the arrest of the brother of the hostage-taker, the hostage-taker was apparently monitoring GMA-7 and found out about it; the situation became worse when gunshots were heard inside the bus assuming that the hostage taker was watching, it monitored the SWAT's movement of the rescue, the massacre ended at least one hour, when the hostage taker was shot dead on live TV, due to teargas that choked the bus.[4] The coverage ate up its primetime block, from 6:30-9:30pm, giving 19.7% of its audience share from AGB Nielsen.

On December 6, 2010, the news program updated its graphics. A day later, it updated its OBB and title card. On February 21, 2011, along with Unang Hirit, Saksi, and GMA Flash Report, the newscast transferred its new studios, Studio 5; launched new graphics, new theme, and new OBB. The new theme music is a remix of 24 Oras 2008–2011 theme music & an element of an opera voice, eventually it was developed in 2010.

On October 10, 2011, 24 Oras updated only its graphics. This also use a new font Antique Olive on their graphics, replacing Myriad font, which is used on other GMA newscasts.

On June 4, 2012, 24 Oras launched its new weather segment titled I.M. Ready: GMA Weather (based on the advisory advertisement of the said title, and the branding of I.M. Ready). On June 2013, 24 Oras introduced its augmented reality graphics, initially used at the beginning of the show for presentation/demonstration purposes. It is currently used for US Dollar exchange rate, Metro Manila air index, some live crosses and for other occasional purposes (such as Christmas/New Year Countdowns and demographics/data gathering in connection of a certain news story).

A notable coverage of GMA News for "Super Typhoon Yolanda", covering the devastating Typhoon Haiyan (international name), won its 4th George Foster's Peabody Awards in 2014.

On November 10, 2014, as part of GMA News' shakeup, Vicky Morales joined the 24 Oras team as its third anchor. Also, GMA Regional newscasts for Bicol, Cebu, Davao, Northern Mindanao, Iloilo, Dagupan and Ilocos adopted the 24 Oras branding. Along with Saksi and Balitanghali, a flat graphic package introduced, and a new title cards, the return of the Myriad font for 24 Oras and the OBB, along with its energetic theme music. All of these changes are answers to competition of its long-time rival, ABS-CBN's TV Patrol.[5][6]

On April 24, 2015, with GMA Network's plans of streamlining regional operations, the Ilokano, Bikol and Northern Mindanao editions were axed by the management, followed by the Iloilo (Ratsada 24 Oras) edition on November 13. All of its news staff were laid off of business and were given severance pay to those affected.[7] On February 1, 2016, North Central Luzon (24 Oras Amianan) and Central Visayas editions of the newscast reverted to their respective titles: Balitang Amianan and Balitang Bisdak, respectively. With the said downgrade, the Southern Mindanao edition (rebranded since October 3, 2016 as 24 Oras Davao) became the only regional edition of the newscast across the entire network. In addition, GMA also axed its remaining local non-news programs for its regional viewers.

After 11 years of delivering showbiz news on Chika Minute, Pia Guanio bid farewell to 24 Oras to concentrate on her family life.[8][9][10] Iya Villania took over as the new Chika Minute anchor on June 15, 2015.[11][12]

On mid-November 2016, a new 24 Oras logo was unveiled on a billboard on the side of the GMA Network Center. The said logo was first used on-air along with a new graphics, OBB, and theme song package on December 5, 2016, retiring the stylized clock logo which was in use since 2004. A new fontface, DIN, has been introduced and is used alongside Myriad, and now uses augmented reality graphics (for the weekday edition) more extensively to rival those of TV Patrol's.

On June 5, 2018, the newscast started implementing some changes in their lower third graphics, reverting its typeface to Myriad. For the first time in the newscast's history, the color blue was used along with red for the lower third graphics. Even with this change, the lower-thirds and some graphics of the Weekend edition remained unchanged (apart from the news ticker, whose clock was also removed and is now colored blue like the Weekday newscast).

On August 24, 2018, Atom Araullo joined the 24 Oras team as the male anchor temporarily replacing Mike Enriquez, where Enriquez is on a medical leave due to that he is currently having treatment for his kidney disease.[13][14][15][16][17]

Weekend edition

Before the launch of the weekend edition, 24 Oras occasionally appeared on weekends during special coverages (e.g., typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, and the Maguindanao massacre) and the weekend before the elections instead of airing GMA Weekend Report or Flash Report Special Edition from 2004−2007 which also anchored by Enriquez and Tiangco (So have been called Tutok: Eleksyon 2004/2007. The two also appeared in Sunday edition before the 2010 and 2013 elections). Notable guest anchors (once appeared) for the special edition were Saksi anchors Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales.

On February 21, 2010, the weekend edition of 24 Oras was launched, replacing GMA Weekend Report. then Balitanghali and current Saksi anchor Pia Arcangel and then Reporter's Notebook host Jiggy Manicad were the anchors of weekend edition.[18]

On April 21, 2018, Manicad announced that he left 24 Oras Weekend as well as his other programs on GMA amid reports that he is considered to run for senator in the 2019 elections, leaving Arcangel as the only weekend anchor for the newscast.[19][20][21]

On August 2018, GMA News journalist Ivan Mayrina announced that he joined the weekend newscast as a new co-anchor of Arcangel, replacing Manicad.[22][23]

Regional newscasts

On January 29, 2016, GMA Regional TV announced the return of Balitang Amianan and Balitang Bisdak on February 1, 2016 as a pre-programming and later preemption of the first 30 minutes of Wowowin, after more than a year of using 24 Oras brand. As a result, 24 Oras Southern Mindanao remained to its branding since November 10, 2014 (rebranded to 24 Oras Davao).[24]

On January 2, 2017, the Davao edition adopted the graphics, OBB, and soundtrack of the national edition; while the two other regional newscasts changed only the graphics and OBB similarly to the said national newscast.[25][26]

On August 25, 2017, 24 Oras Davao ended its more than 2-year run to pave way for Mindanao-wide newscast, One Mindanao.
