The 1973–74 Iraqi Central First Division was the 18th and last season of the Iraqi Central League (the top division of football in central Iraq (i.e. the capital city of Baghdad) from 1956 to 1974). Unlike previous editions, this season saw some teams from outside central Iraq participate. It began on 11 October 1973, with Aliyat Al-Shorta defeating Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya 5–2 on the opening day. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya won the league title for the second time in a row and the fifth in their history. The top scorer was Shorta Al-Najda's Abdul-Zahra Jaber. Matches that ended in draw were settled via penalty shootout, and Shorta Al-Sulaymaniyah withdrew from the league after several games.[1] Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya also won the 1973–74 Iraqi Central FA Cup, becoming the first and only team to win the Central League and Central FA Cup double. The Central League along with the other regional leagues in Basra, Kirkuk and Mosul were replaced by a nationwide league of clubs (the Iraqi Premier League) from the following season, with the Iraq FA Cup being introduced as the national cup competition from 1975.
