Etymology

Attestable in Classical Chinese. Popularised from Japanese 藝術 (げいじゅつ) (geijutsu). "Art" in the modern sense was expressed in Classical Chinese as the single character (), for example 書藝书艺 (shūyì, “the art of writing; calligraphy”), or its near-synonym (dào, “way”), for example 茶道 (chádào, “the way of tea; tea ceremony”).
