Sapphire, Queensland

Sapphire is a town in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. Situated in a locality called The Gemfields, sapphires are mined extensively in the area. At the 2016 census, Sapphire had a population of 572 people.[1]

Geography

The terrain around Sapphire is flat. The highest point in the vicinity is 282 metres above sea level, 1.0 km west of Sapphire. The region is sparsely populated. Sapphire is the largest community in the district.

History

Sapphire Provisional School opened in 1904. On 1 January 1909 it became Sapphire State School. It closed in 1939.[2]

At the 2006 census, Sapphire had a population of 550.[3]

Education

There are no schools in Sapphire. The nearest primary school is in Anakie. The nearest secondary school is Emerald State High School in Emerald.[4]
