Phagwara

Phagwara is a city and a Municipal Corporation with an area of 20 km2(approx.) in Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. The city lies on the National Highway 44 and located 124 kilometres (77 mi) away from Chandigarh and 20 kilometres (12 mi) away from Jalandhar 361 kilometres (224 mi) from Delhi. Phagwara is an industrial area and is famous for cotton, starch, sugar, and auto parts production in Punjab.

Geography

It is on land between Beas and Satluj rivers and is a typical Doaba city.[1] It has an average elevation of 767 feet (234 m).

Demographics

As per provisional data of 2011 census Phagwara urban agglomeration had a population of 117,954, out of which males were 62,171 and females were 55,783. The literacy rate was 87.43 per cent.[2]

As of 2011 India census, Phagwara had a population of 97,864. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Phagwara has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 73%. In Phagwara, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.[3]
