History
Originally called The Auteurs, MUBI was founded in 2007 by Turkish-born entrepreneur Efe Çakarel as a social network for cinephiles, with an interface specifically geared towards aesthetic design and simplicity.[9] Çakarel says that he began work on the business model for MUBI after being unable to watch In the Mood for Love online while in a café in Tokyo.[10] In 2010, the company adopted the new name MUBI.[11]
MUBI is a curated VOD platform,[12] which shows a continually rotating line-up of 30 films at once. In 2020 MUBI launched LIBRARY, a new section that allows members to stream films that have previously been selected by its curators.[13]
MUBI is also a distributor[14] and producer[15]. Co-productions include Port Authority[16] (Danielle Lessovitz), Farewell Amor[17] (Ekwa Msangi), Mon Légionnaire (Rachel Lang), and Maniac Cop[18] (Nicolas Winding Refn).
