Background and pre-release

Billboard Japan first broke the news about a potential new Japanese album on March 26, when it announced that BTS had done a new song, "Stay Gold", as the theme for then upcoming Japanese television drama, Rasen no Meikyū. It stated that the song would be part of the band's "4th Japanese album scheduled to be released this summer".[3] In response to additional reports in April that the album would also include a Japanese version of "On" from Map of the Soul: 7, Big Hit Entertainment later confirmed that an album would be released in July and further information would be given once the official schedule was finalized.[4]

On May 7, the album's official title, Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~, and release date, July 15, were revealed, along with the complete tracklist of 13 songs, and details of the various physical versions that would be available for purchase and their accompanying bonuses. The first concept photo was also shared: a monochrome image of the group in black suits, seated on stage against a curtained backdrop.[5] The album will contain Japanese versions of "On", "Black Swan", "Make It Right", and "Dionysus", and four new, original Japanese songs: "Intro: Calling", "Stay Gold", "Your eyes tell", and "Outro: The Journey". "Your eyes tell" was composed and co-written by BTS member Jungkook. "Stay Gold" will serve as the lead single.[6] Physical pre-orders for Japan, South Korea and other territories began on May 8.[5] US pre-orders began on June 11 and June 15.[7][8]

Universal Music Japan posted a music spot video featuring audio snippets of "On", "Boy With Luv", and "Stay Gold" to its YouTube channel on May 14.[9][10] The clip garnered over 880,000 views within a week of its release.[11] The second concept image was published on May 22, this time featuring the band in pastel clothes against a colorful 2D illustrated background.[12] Album jacket photos showing the official artwork for each of Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~'s editions were revealed on May 28.[13]

"Stay Gold" was pre-released digitally on June 19.[14] The album's digital pre-save period also began that same day across all online platforms.[15] BTS appeared on TBS Japan's CDTV Live! Live! on June 22 with a pre-recorded video performance of "Stay Gold" to further promote the album's release.[16]
