Background

The group held a press conference for the release of their album on the 10th of October 2016. Asked about their new concept and its meaning, leader RM explained, "The harder a temptation is to resist, the more you think about it and vacillate. That uncertainty is part of the process of growing. Blood Sweat & Tears is a song that shows how one thinks, chooses, and grows."[4]

Composition

The song is in the key of C minor. It is ninety-three beats per minute running 3:37 minutes.[5]

Music video

On October 6 of 2016, Big Hit released a teaser for the song.[6][7] At 12:00 KST, October 10, 2016, the official music video was released.[8] The six minute video features RM reciting from a passage of Hermann Hesse’s Demian, which was an inspiration for the album Wings concept, and does not appear on the album version of the song. Billboard K-Town's Tamar Herman described the music video as "a haunting [one] that explores ideas of fate, reality, life and death, and falling from grace."[9]

The video was directed by Choi Yongseok and Ko Yoojeong of Lumpens. Additional production personnel included Nam Hyunwoo of GDW as director of photography, Kim Gyeungseok of Sunny as gaffer, Lee Moonyoung of Myllab as art director, and Shin Yunkyun of DnD line for special effects. Choreography was created by Keone Madrid & Quick Style Crew and supervised by Son Sungdeuk.[8] Within 24 hours of the music video's release, it reached 6.3 million views, setting a new record.[10] Also on October 13, it was reported that "Blood, Sweat & Tears" had become the fastest K-pop music video by a group to reach 10 million views. According to reports, this was achieved in less than 42 hours - almost half the amount of time taken for their previous record "Fire", which took 72 hours.[11] On February 20, 2017 the music video became the third music video by BTS to pass the milestone of 100 million views on YouTube, at the time becoming the second fastest music video by a K-pop group,[12] passing the milestone in less than 134 days after its release. The music video became the third BTS music video to pass 200 million views on October 29, 2017.[13]

The Korean edition of the single did not have a physical release. The Japanese release included two B-side songs, the Japanese versions of "Not Today" and "Spring Day". Four editions were made available: a standard edition, and three limited editions, Type A, Type B, and Type C, which excluded "Spring Day". Photocards were not included in the individual editions, but a special seven-piece photoset was available for a limited time with the complete boxed set offered by Universal Music Japan.[14][15]

Commercial performance

In South Korea, "Blood, Sweat & Tears" became BTS' first domestic number one hit on the Gaon Digital Chart,[16][17] selling 198,987 downloads in the first week and having 3,184,355 streams.[18][19] It sold 362,171 downloads in total for October 2016, and charted at number 6 on the monthly chart.[20][21] In May 2017, it became the group's first song to sell over 1 million copies in South Korea. In December 2017, it became the longest charting single by a boy group on a Korean chart at the time, breaking a ten year old record previously held by Big Bang's 2007 single, "Lies".[22] That record was later broken again by BTS in 2018, with their 2017 single, "Spring Day".

In Canada, BTS became the third K-pop act to chart on the Canadian Hot 100, ranking at number 86, a new best for a K-pop group.[23] In the United States, BTS topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart for the week of October 29.[24] They also charted on YouTube's Music Global Top 100, ranking 17th on the video chart, and 14th on the tracks chart.[25]

In Japan, the Korean version peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, with 4,156 copies sold.[26][27] On May 10, 2017, the Japanese version was released, selling 144,234 copies on the Oricon daily chart,[28] and 223,082 copies according to SoundScan Japan.[29] The song charted 1st on Oricon's weekly single chart, Billboard Japan Hot 100, and top singles sales, selling 310,276 copies in the first week according to SoundScan Japan.[30]
