Indian Institute of Management Bangalore

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore or IIM-B) is a public business school and Institute of National Importance located in Bangalore, India. Founded in 1973, it was the third IIM to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad.[2]

IIMB is a globally ranked institute as per the QS World University Rankings and Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. The institute offers Post Graduate, Doctoral and Executive Education programmes. The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), a two-year, full-time residential MBA programme is the flagship programme, offered to candidates admitted through the Common Admission Test.[3] IIM Bangalore offers the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), a one-year full-time MBA programme for candidates admitted through GMAT.[4] IIMB also offers two-year part-time executive MBA programme for working executives[5] and a 2-year full-time MBA programme in business analytics.[6]

In addition to its academic programmes, the institute is engaged in facilitating research, offering consulting services, conducting seminars and academic conferences and publishing journals.

History

In 1972, a committee headed by Ravi J. Matthai, seeing the rising demand for graduates of the first two IIMs namely IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, recommended the need to have two more IIMs. While the first two IIMs were oriented towards the private sector, it was decided that the new institutions shall be oriented towards the public sector to cater to its growing needs of management graduates. The Institute at Bangalore was consequently set up next year, designed to cater exclusively to the needs of public sector enterprises.[7] For the proposed institute, the Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres (40 ha) of land free of cost and a contribution of ₹3 million (US$42,000). T. A. Pai and N. S. Ramaswamy were appointed as chairman and director respectively. The institute was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on 28 October 1973. The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings, which were rented on the Langford Road. The new institute came up at Bannerghatta Road Campus in South Bangalore in 1983.[8]

The 2-year Post Graduate Programme commenced in July 1974 and the first convocation of the institute was held on 10 July 1976 with a total of 48 graduating students.[9] On 27 August 1998, the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management was launched with an intake of 58 students. The institute's start-up incubation center, N S Raghavan Center for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) came into existence in March 2002. It was supported by grants from Nadathur Sarangapani Raghavan, an Indian industrialist, and one of the seven founders of Infosys Technologies.

On 7 June 2002, the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management was launched. The participants of the programme were members of the Indian Civil Services. On 3 April 2009, the 1-year Executive Post Graduate Programme was launched for professionals having 7–15 years of work experience.

In May 2016, the institute partnered with Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to offer incubation for social enterprises and not-for-profit start-ups.

Motto

The motto derived from Sanskrit तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु (pronounced as tejasvi nāvadhītamastu) is an extract from the Shanti Mantra recited in Taittiriya Upanishad, Katha Upanishad, Mandukya Upanishad and Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The motto translates to Let our study be enlightening.[10]

The current IIMB Logo depicting the sun, was designed by the National Institute of Design and has been in use since 1994.[11]

Academics

Prior to 2018, IIM Bangalore awarded diplomas instead of degrees because IIMs were not set up as universities through an act of parliament but as societies under the Societies Act.[12] The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 enacted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in December 2017 declared IIMs as Institutes of National Importance, thereby allowing IIMs to award degrees to their students instead of diplomas.[12] Consequently, in 2018, IIM Bangalore became the first IIM to award MBA degree to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme in Management[12]

IIM Bangalore offers degree-granting programmes which lead to Master of Business Administration, Master of Management Studies in Public Policy, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. In addition to the full-time programmes, the institute offers a wide variety of on-campus short-duration certificate programmes. It also offers a plethora of Massive Open Online Courses including the Micro Masters programme in management through the edX platform.

Cetrificate Programmes

IIM Bangalore offers two full-time certificate programmes.

  • N. S. Ramaswamy Pre-doctoral Fellowship - Launched in 2018, the fellowship programme helps participants prepare for a prestigious doctoral degree in management.[19]
  • Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship - Launched in 2020, this programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India that is designed and implemented by IIM Bangalore and in collaboration with State Skill Development Missions. The two-year Fellowship seeks to combine classroom sessions at IIM Bangalore with an intensive field immersion at the district level to create credible plans and identify barriers in raising employment, economic output, and promote livelihoods in rural areas.[20]

International Collaborations and Student Exchange Programmes

IIM Bangalore has an extensive network of partner B-schools worldwide through which it conducts student exchange programmes. Students of the two-year MBA programme go on exchange programmes during the 5th term of the course. More than a hundred students from IIM Bangalore leave for foreign institutes and an equivalent number from various B-schools arrive in Bangalore.[21]

Doctoral exchange is also available with schools such as National University of Singapore, University of Cologne, and schools in the United States. Scholarships are provided by partner schools or by government grants such as German Academic Exchange Service.

IIM Bangalore conducts an international immersion programme for the one year MBA candidates in the IVth term. The two-week programme gives one year students an opportunity to take courses in some of the leading universities in Asia and Europe. Structured around a visit to an emerging economy such as China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa or a developed one in Europe or in the Asian region like Singapore or South Korea, the module provides insights into the country's economic, social, political and cultural life.[22]

Global Network for Advanced Management

Launched in 2012, the Global Network for Advanced Management includes 30 leading business schools from diverse regions, countries, cultures, and economies in different phases of development. IIMB is the only Indian management school to be a member of the Global Advanced Network for Management (GNAM). The GNAM provides students of partner schools access to select courses offered by other partner schools through the use of digital technology, just as it offers the opportunity to faculty members to teach an international class comprising students from the member schools.[23]

Journal : IIMB Management Review (IMR)

IIMB Management Review (IMR) is a quarterly journal brought out by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Addressed to management practitioners, researchers, and academics, IMR aims to engage rigorously with practices, concepts, and ideas in the field of management, with an emphasis on providing managerial insights, in a format that is accessible to a wide audience.[24]

The full-time One Year MBA programme (EPGP) is ranked 27 in the world amongst the top 100 Global MBA Programmes by the Financial Times "Global MBA Ranking 2020"[28] The one year MBA of IIM Bangalore has also been ranked 44 in the world by QS Global MBA 2020 ranking.[25] The full-time Two Year MBA programme (PGP) at IIMB is ranked 26 globally, amongst the top 100 Master's in Management programmes by the 'QS Master in Management Ranking for 2020'.[31] The two-year Masters programme was ranked 44 in 2019 by Financial Times in its Masters in Management Ranking.[29] The part-time Weekend Executive MBA programme (PGPEM) is ranked 12th in the Asia-pacific region the QS Executive MBA Rankings 2019.[27] IIM Banglore was ranked 2nd among management schools by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020.[30] Eduniversal, Paris has ranked Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) first in Central Asia and India in 2019.[32] IIMB has been kept in the top 10 business schools globally by '2020 Positive Impact Ranking for Business Schools'.[33]

Mentorship

IIM Bangalore successfully mentored IIM Trichy when it was established in 2011.[34] Currently it mentors IIM Visakhapatnam from its establishment in 2015. IIM Visakhapatnam operates from temporary campus inside Andhra University. It follows similar PGP program[35] with faculty[36] coming from IIM Bangalore.[37][38]

The current campus is located at Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore and was designed by Pritzker prize winning architect B. V. Doshi in partnership with Joseph Allen Stein and Jai Rattan Bhalla. It was completed in 1983.[39] The campus occupying an area of over 100-acres is located in South Bangalore. IIMB campus design is admired for its unique all-stone architecture and lush woods. IIMB has planned to set up its second campus on the outskirts of the city near Jigani in Anekal.[40]

Architecture

One of the masterpieces designed by the famed architect, the inspiration for the design of IIMB was gardens and temples. Long corridors meander across lawns, and sunlight shines through pergolas into various parts of the building, creating a play of light and shadow.

The design of IIMB is a shining example of sustainable architecture and an eco friendly campus design with locally available granite being the primary building material.

Academic blocks

The academic blocks were designed by Stein, Doshi & Balla architects led by B. V. Doshi and were completed by 1983. A few blocks were added later owing to the increase in the number of students being enrolled. Currently, there are blocks lettered from A to P where classes, faculty offices and other administrative entities are located. The classes are fully air conditioned with state of art facilities.

Library

The library is housed in a 55,000 square feet complex consisting of four floors. This fully automated state of art facility consists of about 235,000 documents and books apart from 85,000 journals are available for reference. The library also subscribes to 27 newspapers and more than 200 newsletters.[41]

Hostels and Sports Centre

IIMB consists of 16 hostel blocks apart from one executive block and the executive accommodation at the Management Development Centre. The hostel consists of 16 blocks named from A to P. IIMB has separate facilities for soccer, cricket, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and pool. An integrated indoor sports complex with a swimming pool is also available.[42]

Auditorium

The Auditorium is situated within the academic blocks. It has a seating capacity of 500 people and plays host to various events, functions and guest lectures held at the institute.

Computer Centre

The institute has a 24-hour Internet connectivity with 600+ PCs and workstations. The campus is also fully WiFi enabled.[43]

NSRCEL
Nadathur S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL)

Nadathur S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) was set up in 2002 to aid the entrepreneurial activities at IIMB. The centre acts as an incubator for new business ideas.[44] It is a vibrant ecosystem of industry experts, mentors, researchers, and academicians aimed at providing incubation to early-stage ventures across various stages, sectors, and scope. As of April 2020, NSRCEL has incubate more than 240 stratups with a combined value of 1.5 Billion dollar. And created more than 5400 jobs.[45]

Campus life

There are several student-run clubs and societies at IIM Bangalore. The student bodies are divided into clubs, mini clubs, chapters and societies are managed by the students themselves and are governed by the Student Affairs Council. The following are the list of clubs and societies.

Students Affairs Council

It is the apex body which controls all the aspects of student life including other clubs and societies.[46]

Academic Council

The Academic Council is an elected body that facilitates the management of the academic system at IIM Bangalore. The Council acts as an interface between students and faculty and is also responsible for elective bidding process for courses by assessing the academic needs of the student community .[47]

Placement Committee

More than 100 companies across the globe visit the campus every year for summers and final placements. The placement processes are governed by the Career Development Services and facilitated by the Placement Committee.[48]

Events

IIMB celebrates the Foundation Day on 28 October.[49] The 46th foundation day lecture was given by architect B.V Doshi, who had designed the IIMB campus more than three decades ago.[50]

Eximius

Eximius is the annual entrepreneurship summit organized by IIM Bangalore. The three-day event focuses on entrepreneurship and generation of new business ideas. The event has hosted several eminent speakers including Shashi Tharoor, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Piyush Pandey, Mallika Sarabhai, Kris Gopalakrishnan, Kiran Bedi, Rashmi Bansal, Shaheen Mistri, Harish Hande, D R Mehta among others.[51]

Unmaad

Unmaad is the flagship annual cultural festival of IIM Bangalore. The three-day event draws participants from across India. Unmaad features drama and music performances, dances, quizzes, debates, street plays, professional concerts and a fashion show. The event has hosted performances by artists including Farhan Akhtar, Shankar Ehsaan Loy,[52] KK, Kailash Kher, Lucky Ali, Strings, Jethro Tull,[53] Indian Ocean.

Vista

Vista is an annual, international business summit hosted by IIM Bangalore. The three-day summit brings together leaders from the fields of marketing, finance, operations, human resources, consulting and social work. The platform lets students learn from business professionals through events, competitions and case studies. The event also incorporates guest speaker sessions. Previous speakers include Devi Shetty, Mukesh Ambani, Prahlad Kakkar, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Kamal Haasan, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Gurucharan Das, Justice Santosh Hegde, Arun Shourie, Gul Panag, M J Akbar, Nandita Das, Narain Karthikeyan and Shobhaa De.[54]

Yamini

Yamini is a music festival in Bangalore, organized by Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) and hosted at IIMB.[55][56][57]

IIMBUE - IIMB Leadership Conclave

IIMB Leadership Conclave is an annual event that brings together globally renowned thinkers and achievers with IIMB alumni over a weekend of thought-provoking conversations.

The theme for 2018's event was – "Sensing the future".  Variety of renowned speakers talk about ways to develop a shared understanding of the tectonic changes we are experiencing geo-politically, economically, technologically and societally – and addressed complex leadership challenges for the future.[58]

Women Leadership Summit

Women Leadership Summit is organized every year in January by IIM Bangalore. It seeks to build gender-inclusive mind-sets among students, entrepreneurs, and corporates. The one-day event intends to create awareness through talks and workshops with prominent and inspiring personalities. The event has hosted eminent speakers including Vinita Bali, Malavika Harita, Sneha Priya, Lakshmi Ishwar, Wilma Rodrigues, Nirmala Sankaran, Neeta Revankar, Dr. Gita Sen, Gauri Jayaram, Sanjaya Sharma.[59][60][61]

Research

Research in IIM Bangalore is performed in research centres focusing on different aspects of managements. These include the ERP Research Centre, Centre for Insurance Research and Education, N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, Centre for Public Policy, Centre for Software & Information Technology Management, Centre for Development of Cases and Teaching Aids, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship Centre for Capital Market & Risk Management, Centre for Financial Markets and Institutions and the Supply Chain Management Centre.[62]

Alumni

IIM Bangalore has a strong alumni network with its alumni taking over many prestigious positions across the world. IIMB Alumni Association (IIMBAA) manages interactions with the Alumni network and keeps them engaged with the business school. Anusmaran, a yearly event conducted across multiple cities in the world serves as a rendezvous. Some of the prominent alumni include academicians such as Aswath Damodaran and Raghavendra Rau, author Karan Bajaj and film maker Nila Madhab Panda. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of ISRO and business executives like Ravi Subramanian and Sameer Suneja were also IIMB graduates.

The campus was the site for the shooting of the Bollywood film 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film is loosely based on the famous novel Five Point Someone by Indian writer Chetan Bhagat.[75]

Social activism

The students and faculty members of IIM, Bangalore have raised issues regarding business ethics and corporate responsibility. Activists led by Prof Deepak Malghan have protested the environmental degradation by a thermometer factory in Kodaikanal run by Hindustan Unilever, accusing it of dumping glass contaminated with mercury in municipal dumps, or selling for scrap instead of dealing with it as per international norms.[76] After protest by activists led by Dr Malghan, Hindustan Unilever admitted before court to being guilty in the case in 2010.[77][78] Dr Malghan wrote letter to IIM students urging them to dis-invite Hindustan Unilever during campus placement, which led to a raging controversy[79]

IIM aims to create a social impact through research and practice, and by enabling wide reach of management education through its MOOCS.[80]
