Daihatsu Ayla

The Daihatsu Ayla is a city car designed by Daihatsu and manufactured by Astra Daihatsu Motor in Indonesia. The Ayla is also sold by Toyota as the Toyota Agya in Indonesia, Americas (except United States, Canada and Mexico) and the Caribbean, and Toyota Wigo in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Vietnam.[1][8][9] The car is also rebadged, redesigned and manufactured in Malaysia by Perodua as the Perodua Axia.[10]

The name "Ayla" was taken from the Sanskrit word meaning "light", while "Agya" means "fast".[7]

History

The car was announced and displayed at the 20th Indonesia International Motor Show in September 2012 as Toyota and Daihatsu's answer to the Indonesia government's plan for the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) program. The car itself is a derivative of the LA300 Mira e:S.[11] Initially the car was available for advance booking after the show but it only lasted for few weeks because the manufacturers were waiting for the government to finalize regulation regarding the LCGC program. The Agya and Ayla used the same 1.0 L 1KR-DE three-cylinder engine in Indonesia until 2017.[6][12]

The first units of Agya and Ayla rolled off the assembly line at Karawang plant on 25 October 2012, and entered mass production in September 2013.

After a year since it was announced, Agya and Ayla were officially launched and sold to general public on 9 September 2013.

In July 2013, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) announced they would import the Agya in December to compete with the Mitsubishi Mirage.[7] It has a different name for the Philippine market.[13] In January 2014, TMP announced that the car would be called Wigo[1] and use the same 1.0 L 1KR-DE three-cylinder engine as the Aygo.[14]

2017 facelift

The Ayla received its first facelift on 7 April 2017, along with the Agya. The development led by Daihatsu chief engineer Nobuhiko Ono.[15] This facelift includes an updated front and rear bumper designs, projector headlamp with LED side lamps on some trim levels, LED taillamp, dual airbags, 3-point seatbelts, steering switch controls, side impact beams and improved interior quality. The 1.0 L variants of the Ayla retained the same headlamp design from the previous version. The facelift also includes additional engine options: the 1.0 L 1KR-VE three-cylinder (for Agya only) and 1.2 L 3NR-VE four-cylinder engine from the Sigra, while the 1.0 L variants of the Ayla still uses the same engine as the previous version.[16][17]

2020 facelift

The Ayla and Agya received their second facelift on 19 March 2020. The facelift, depends on the variant, includes an updated front bumper design (based on Ayla Turbo Concept for 1.2 L variants of the Ayla),[18][19] updated rear lamp cluster, updated wheel design shared with the upper variants of Sigra or Calya, retractable side mirrors, digital AC controls and an engine start/stop button. The 1.0 L variants of the Ayla still retained the same design from the previous version.[20][21]

Agya/Wigo

In Indonesia, the Agya is available in five different trim levels. All of them has dual airbags while the TRD S trim levels are available with anti-lock braking system. The five trim levels are:[23]

  • 1.0 E (only with 5-speed manual transmission, 2012–2020)
  • 1.0 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission, 2012–present)
  • 1.0 TRD S (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission, 2012–2017)
  • 1.2 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission, 2017–present)
  • 1.2 TRD S (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission, 2017–present)

In the Philippines, the Wigo comes in three trim levels:

  • 1.0 E (only with 5-speed manual transmission)
  • 1.0 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.0 TRD (only with 4-speed automatic transmission)

In Sri Lanka, the Wigo is offered in 1.0 G and TRD S trim levels with only the automatic transmission available.[24]

In Brunei, the Wigo is offered in 1.0 G automatic only. It was launched in July 2015.

In 2017, the Wigo was launched in Vietnam. It is offered only in 1.2 G trim with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission.

Ayla Turbo Concept

The Ayla Turbo is an one-off concept car that was shown at the 26th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in August 2018. It is based on the 1.2 L version of the standard Ayla. The two-tone red and black exterior colour is partially inspired from the 1984 Charade de Tomaso Turbo. The front and rear bumper design has also been redesigned. The 1.2 L 3NR-VE engine has been extensively modified by fitting a turbocharger that is equipped with intercooler, wastegate and blow-off valve with 0.5 bar (7.3 psi) of boost that uprates the power output to 147 kW (197 hp; 200 PS) and torque to 242 N⋅m (178 lbf⋅ft). Further engine changes include the use of low-compression piston, dual fuel injector, open air filter and stronger connecting rod. The 3-module piggyback has been used to manipulate the engine data for performance orientation, while the exhaust system uses a stainless steel free-flow type with 63.5 mm (2.5 in) of diameter. The interior has been stripped down in order to gain lower weight and the roll cage has been added, along with FIA-certified Sparco racing bucket seats. The AC and other unnecessary features has also been removed. The car made a claimed 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 10.3 seconds, 2.3 seconds faster than the standard car (12.6 seconds). The car was still in developmental phase at the time and costs around Rp 500,000,000 (US$35,100 as of March 2019) to build.[25][26][27][28][29]

Marketing

Toyota Motor Philippines launched a massive marketing campaign for the Wigo, featuring actors John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo.[30][31]

Awards

In the Philippines, the Wigo has been awarded Best Micro Car of the Year by the Car Awards Group for 2014–2015.[32]

Sales

As of February 2020, more than 214,000 units of Ayla have been sold in Indonesia.[33] 278,465 units of Agya have been sold as well.[34]

Recall

In September 2018, Toyota Motor Philippines issued a recall notice on over 15,000 Wigos produced from 5 April to 15 December 2017. The affected units have a faulty engine wire that may break from engine vibration, resulting in a decrease in engine power and a warning lamp illumination.[46]
