Afro-Arubans

Afro-Arubans or Arubans of African descent, are Arubans whose ancestry lies within the continent of Africa, most notably West Africa. Afro-Arubans are a minority ethnic group in Aruba. They speak Papiamento, an Afro-Portuguese dialect spoken in the ABC islands. The language dates back at least 300 years and is based on African linguistic structures combined with vocabulary from Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish.[1] Many Afro-Arubans today are mixed with various indigenous populations in the americas, and are descendents from nearby islands and nations such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Curaçao, the Lesser Antilles, and/or South America.[2]
