1971–72 Paris Saint-Germain F.C. season

The 1971–72 season was Paris Saint-Germain Football Club's 2nd season in existence and 1st season in Division 1, the top tier of French football. The club also competed in the Coupe de France.[1] PSG played their home matches mainly at Stade de Paris in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, but occasionally at Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir in Colombes as well, registering an average attendance of 10,030 spectators per match.[1][2] Guy Crescent, who had replaced Pierre-Étienne Guyot before the start of the season, presided the club until December 1971, when Henri Patrelle became the new president. The team was managed by Pierre Phelipon, this time exclusively as manager.[1][3] For the second season running, French defender Jean Djorkaeff was the team captain.[4]

PSG ended its inaugural season in the top flight with a safe 16th place, meaning they would continue in Division 1 next year, but the club was in a delicate financial situation.[5][6] The Paris City Council offered 850,000 francs to pay the club's debt and save its place in the elite, but in return demanded PSG to adopt the more Parisian name "Paris Football Club."[5] Henri Patrelle refused the name change and the club split on June 20, 1972.[7][8] Backed by the council, Guy Crescent and Pierre-Étienne Guyot re-formed Paris FC.[9][10]

Consequently, Paris FC remained in Division 1, while Patrelle's Paris Saint-Germain kept their name but were administratively relegated to Division 3, thus losing professional status.[5][11] Logically, most of the club's stars, including team captain Jean Djorkaeff, preferred to play elite football with Paris FC. Since only top-tier pro clubs could have a reserve team, PSG took the spot of their development side in the third tier and rebuilt their squad with many of those upcoming youth academy players.[5]

Coupe de Paris

Having become an amateur side, the remaining first-team players and the reserves, now forming a single PSG squad, played in the Coupe de Paris final, for which the club's former reserve lineup had qualified. Organized by the Ligue de Paris, the Coupe de Paris is a regional knockout competition for Parisian amateur clubs. This title, however, is attributed to the reserves because it isn't a professional tournament. Therefore, PSG's official statistics don't take into account matches played in the competition nor appearances, goals and assists made by their players.[16][17]

After eliminating Red Star B, Viry-Châtillon, Noisy-le-Grand and CA Viry, the decisive match took place just four days after the club's split. Paris Saint-Germain weren't favorites against a much more experimented Malakoff side, but still managed to keep them at bay as the game finished goalless. As a result, a replay match was played four days later. This time, though, PSG were the better side and recorded a 2–0 victory to clinch the trophy.[16][17]
