1977–78 Paris Saint-Germain F.C. season
The 1977–78 season was Paris Saint-Germain Football Club's 8th season in existence and 5th season in Division 1, the top tier of French football. The club also competed in the Coupe de France.[1] PSG played its home matches at Parc des Princes in Paris, but once at Stade de Paris in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine as well, registering an average attendance of 21,754 spectators per match.[1][2] Additionally, the Parisians played one French Cup home game at Parc des Sports Et de l'Amitié in Narbonne.[1] The club was presided by Daniel Hechter until January 1978, when Francis Borelli became the new president. The team was managed by Jean-Michel Larqué, who replaced Pierre Alonzo before the start of the season.[1][3] Larqué was PSG's second and last player-manager after Pierre Phelipon.[4][5] For the second season running, Algerian midfielder Mustapha Dahleb was the team captain.[6]

In January 1978, Daniel Hechter was banned for life from football by the French Football Federation for running a ticketing scheme at Parc des Princes.[7][8][9] On January 8, 1978, PSG beat Olympique de Marseille 5–1 in his final match at the stadium as club president. Team captain Mustapha Dahleb offered Hechter the match ball after the final whistle and was then carried in triumph by the players while the fans in attendance chanted his name.[8] The next day, Francis Borelli, who had been vice-president until then, became the new boss of the Île-de-France club.[8][10] Carlos Bianchi, who arrived to Paris in June 1977, was Hechter's last big signing. The Argentine striker went on to score 37 goals in 38 league matches.[10]

Tournoi de Paris
This season marked the 4th time Paris Saint-Germain hosted the Tournoi de Paris as well as the competition's 15th edition overall.[16][17] Brazilian star Paulo Cézar was invited to play with PSG. The 1978 edition proved to be the most unbalanced of them all. A few weeks before the 1978 FIFA World Cup, PSG invited the national football teams of Netherlands and Iran. The Clockwork Orange won the competition with ease, defeating PSG in the semi-finals and then hammering Club Brugge in the final (7–1). The Parisians finished third after defeating Iran.[16][18]
