"Yikes" is a song by American rapper Kanye West. It was released as the lead single from West's eighth studio album, Ye (2018), on June 11, 2018 by GOOD Music and Def Jam Recordings.[1] The song was released as a single to UK mainstream radio on June 8.[2] The song was produced by West and co-produced by Mike Dean, with additional production by Pi'erre Bourne and Apex Martin. The producers wrote the song alongside rappers Drake, Cyhi the Prynce, Consequence, 070 Shake, Malik Yusef, Kenneth Pershon, Bump J and Pardison Fontaine, as well as James Mbarack Achieng and Ayub Ogada, whose song "Kothbiro" is sampled on the track.

Background

Radio host Peter Rosenberg originally reported Canandian rapper Drake to have contributed songwriting to the track, which was initially uncredited.[3] American producer Pi'erre Bourne also claimed that he worked on the track but that the credits weren't updated yet to show his contributions.[4] The digital credits for the song were later updated to include extra songwriting credits.[5]

Composition

The track contains a sample of "Kothbiro", written by James Mbarack Achieng and Ayub Ogada, and performed by Black Savage.[6]

Critical reception

Ann-Derrick Gaillot of The Outline described the track's beat as being 'horror film-esque'.[7] Chris Hooton of The Independent described "Yikes" as having 'The kind of pop opening to a track we haven't heard Kanye since his 808s and Heartbreak days.'[8] Reviewing Ye for Vice, Robert Christgau said "Yikes" featured the album's "assiest moment", when West "claims #MeToo for his foggy fat self, and if it's also the catchiest, fuck you if you can't take a joke."[9]

Commercial performance

The song debuted at number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 upon the release of Ye, before being released as a single.[10] The song marked West's first solo song without any featured artists to reach the top 10 of the Hot 100 since "Heartless" reached number 2 in 2008.[11]

After being released as a single, the track made its debut at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart.[12] "Yikes" performed best in Canada, charting at number 6 on the Canadian Hot 100.[13]

On 19th July 2018, the song was certified Gold in the US.[14]
