"Looking for Trouble" is a song by American rapper and producer Kanye West, which features Pusha T, Cyhi the Prynce, Big Sean and J. Cole. The track was released as part of West's 2010 GOOD Fridays program.

Composition and lyrics

The song is heavily composed of multiple elements from Steel Pulse's 1982 track "Blues Dance Raid".[1] Drums from 1980 single "The Big Beat" by Billy Squier are sampled throughout it.[2]

When Cole raps his verse, he spins off one of his mentor Jay-Z's most famous lines.[3] It was revealed by Cole that his verse was wrote on a ride to Detroit that lasted an hour-and-a-half.[4]

Release

"Looking for Trouble" was released on November 7, 2010 as part of West's GOOD Fridays program for that year, but the date of its release was actually a Sunday.[5] The reason for this delay was because West had been waiting on one of the verses to be recorded.[6] On Cole's mixtape Friday Night Lights (2010), it was made available as a bonus track.[7]

Critical reception

The track was viewed by Noisey as feeling: 'like not much more than a fun cypher' and no particular verse was viewed as a highlight, since it was written that: 'everyone decided to bring their most rappity-rapping bars to the party'.[8] On the other hand, EARMILK viewed Cole's verse as the highlight, writing of it that he: 'Murdered this s**t for real' and described the song's place in the series of GOOD Fridays releases as being 'another banger'.[9]

When Very Smart Brothas ranked West's 2010 GOOD Fridays releases from best to worst, "Looking for Trouble" was placed at number 12 out of 15.[10] Complex included Cole's appearance on it when listing his best verses.[11]
