"Send It Up" is a song by American hip hop recording artist Kanye West, which lies on his sixth solo studio album Yeezus (2013). It was produced by West, Daft Punk, Gesaffelstein, Brodinski, Arca and Mike Dean. The track features vocals from King Louie for the first verse of it.[1] It was covered by punk rock band IDLES in August 2018.[2]

Background

Despite "Send It Up" being West and Louie's first ever collaboration, he was shouted out in Kanye's 2012 track "I Don't Like (Remix)".[3] Louie also has a writing credit on fellow Yeezus track "New Slaves", despite only having vocals on one of the album's songs.

Composition and recording

Within the track, a sample of "Memories" by Beenie Man is used.[4] When Yeezus was reworked on Apple Music in April 2016, two lines were rapped a cappella within the song, which was a change from them being originally rapped over the instrumentation.[5]

In an interview with MTV, Louie revealed that his verse for "Send It Up" was freestyled.[6]

Critical reception

Pitchfork described the track as being 'riotous' and wrote of Louie's appearance on the album that: 'His presence, along with that of fellow Chi-town driller Chief Keef, makes the message clear: America may want to ignore these young black men from the gang-strewn South Side, but here, they have a voice.'.[7] Alex Petridis of The Guardian pointed out the song's: 'mid-tempo four-to-the-floor thud' in praise.[8]

Live performances

West performed five songs from Yeezus live at the Governor's Ball on June 10, 2013, eight days before its release, and "Send It Up" was one of them, but he didn't announce its title at the time.[9] The track was part of West's set list when he performed the first concert in New York City on The Yeezus Tour.[10]

Commercial performance

Upon the release of the featuring album, the song debuted at number 50 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[11]
