Valerie J. Longhurst is the Majority Leader of the Delaware House of Representatives. She is a Democrat, and has represented the 15th district (Bear, Delaware City, St. Georges) since 2004. Representative Longhurst is currently chair of the House Administration, Ethics and Rules committees. She is also the former chair and current member of the Manufactured Housing Committee.

Valerie spent her early adult years working in the insurance industry. She formerly worked for AIG Insurance in Chadds Ford, Pa. During her tenure, she advanced her career from corporate trainer to quality assurance manager and ultimately to director of operations.

In addition to her responsibilities in the General Assembly, she plays an important role in many local and national organizations, including:

Vice Chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, National Conference of State Legislators Women’s Network Advisory Council member and Budget and Revenue Standing Committee member, Council for State Governments Governing Board member, Police Action League Board member, Community Involvement Advisory Board member, Delaware Sports Commission Advisory Council member, and Bear Glasgow YMCA Board member.[1]

Prior to becoming a Legislator, she volunteered for local organizations, including Delaware City Refinery (community advisory panel member), National Alopecia Areata Foundation (Delaware support group leader), Bear Babe Ruth Little League (board member, softball commissioner and coach), and Emerald Ridge Maintenance Corporation (vice president).[1]
