Unified Buddhist Church

The Unified Buddhist Church (in French: Église Bouddhique Unifiée) is the governing body for the various organizations associated with the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh.[1] It was originally founded by Hanh in Vietnam in the 1960s,[1] but was re-established in France in 1969 during the Vietnam War, when Hanh became unable to return to his homeland.[2] Through the Unified Buddhist Church, Hanh established the Sweet Potato community in 1975, which later became the Plum Village meditation center in 1982;[2][3] the Dharma Cloud Temple and the Dharma Nectar Temple in 1988; and the Adornment of Loving Kindness Temple in 1995. Thich Nhat Hanh’s sangha (or Buddhist community) in France is usually referred to as the “Plum Village Sangha.” A nonsectarian community of about 200 monks, nuns, and resident lay-practitioners live permanently at Plum Village, whilst its annual visitors total some 8,000.[2][3]

The Unified Buddhist Church operates Plum Village in France, the Maple Forest Monastery and Green Mountain Dharma Center in Vermont (which were consolidated in May 2007 as the Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush, New York), and, since March 1999, the Community of Mindful Living (CML), Parallax Press, and Deer Park Monastery in California.[1]

The Unified Buddhist Church, Inc. (UBC), a non-profit corporation, was registered in 1997 to represent Thich Nhat Hanh and his sangha in the United States.[1] It is a sister organization of the Unified Buddhist Church (Église Bouddhique Unifieé) in France.

Unified Buddhist Church, Inc. is qualified by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.[4]
