The Field Trip

"The Field Trip" is the first episode of the second series of The Inbetweeners. It first aired on 2 April 2009 on E4.

Plot

It is January and the boys have signed up for the annual Geography and Sociology field trip to Swanage. Although Neil does not study either of the subjects, he is allowed to come along by agreeing to help Mr Kennedy – a Geography teacher who is alleged to be a paedophile. Jay tells his friends that he took Geography so that he could go on the field trip. He claims that in Swanage, an attractive middle-aged housewife has sex with one male pupil from their school each year "because she loves young meat" and that his friend in the upper-sixth had sex with her last year.

When the boys are forced from the back seat of the coach by Mark Donovan, the school bully and juvenile delinquent, Will gets a stroke of luck when he gets to sit next to pretty new girl Lauren. Will is attracted to her, but she is attracted to Simon. Will's repeated Yoda impression in particular puts her off him. Simon volunteers to pair up with her to do their survey. Jay and Neil do their survey together, and Will is paired with Big John, an unpopular, socially inept, overweight student.

The boys arrive in Swanage, and as Will and Simon both attempt to impress Lauren, Neil and Jay set off to find the legendary "Swanage MILF". The boys and Lauren go to a room where some of their classmates are having a party. Mark opens the door, takes a bottle of vodka which Mr Kennedy gave to Neil, then slams the door on them. Simon and Lauren embrace, to the dismay of Will, then the four boys go to their shared bedroom. Mr Kennedy comes into the bedroom and rubs Neil's legs before Mr Gilbert comes in and escorts Mr Kennedy out.

Simon arranges to meet Lauren, but Will convinces Simon to try for his childhood friend Carli instead. Simon realises that he still loves Carli and Will takes the opportunity to invite Lauren on a trip on a motorboat. Neil and Jay fail to find the MILF after Jay embarrasses himself questioning different women and, along with Simon, they crash the boat trip. As Lauren has not arrived, Will agrees to take them out for a short trip. Jay deliberately rocks the boat and tips it, causing Simon, who is standing up, to fall into the harbour. He is undressed by Neil in order to prevent his saturated clothes from causing him hypothermia. Neil throws a fishing line over the side, then pulls it back in with a large fish attached. Neil kills it by repeatedly punching it with his bare fist, as it would no longer be able to survive after being out of the water. Jay sets off an emergency flare and the boys are rescued, albeit at the expense of looking like idiots to the rest of the field trip party. Will narrates a summary of the trip, in which he says that Lauren had to move away soon after, and Simon never saw her again.
