Plot

Will McKenzie (Simon Bird) arrives at his new comprehensive school, Rudge Park, as he cannot continue to have private education due to his mother's financial problems following her divorce. Will has a meeting with the other new students, otherwise known as 'The Freaks', as well the aggressive Head of Sixth, Mr Gilbert (Greg Davies), where he is issued and forced to wear a large green badge introducing himself. This, alongside his smart clothing and usage of a briefcase, invites continuous mockery from fellow students. Upon arrival at his class, he openly insults Mr. Gilbert in an attempt to impress his fellow classmates, unaware that Gilbert is standing behind him. Gilbert then forces a student within the class, Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), to look after Will as they share the same timetable, despite Simon's protests.

Will continues to be called names around the school as Simon tries to avoid being seen with him. Whilst in the toilet, Will listens to Simon and his friends Jay (James Buckley) and Neil (Blake Harrison) talk about sex, with Jay falsely claiming to have had sex with many girls, but Simon contests this and says they are all virgins, alluding to their unpopularity. Soon after, Mark Donovan (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), the school bully, further humiliates Will by taking photos of him on the toilet which he and a friend photocopy and display all around the school.

Simon, Neil and Jay are sat in the common room when Carli D'Amato (Emily Head), Simon's crush and childhood friend, inadvertently gives Simon an erection when standing close to him, which Jay announces to the whole room, much to their amusement. Will sees this as an opportunity to make his first friend as Simon is now widely mocked around the school and nicknamed "boner" by many. Consequently, Will saves him a seat during their next class. At the end of the school day, Neil and Jay are irritated to find that Will is choosing to hang around with them, but Simon insists that he should be given a chance. They discuss the school's annual visit to the Black Horse pub, but Neil forgets its name and reminds the group the pub they are meeting at is the Black Bull. Will decides to invite himself along to this student gathering, despite Jay and Neil's objections.

Upon arrival at the Black Bull, the boys are confused to find the pub strangely empty, but eventually assume that they are just earlier than expected. Jay uses his fake ID to try and buy drinks, but is unsuccessful in getting alcohol for the others as they require ID too. Will tries to get served, and is remotely successful, getting cider and carvery dinners with the help of another punter called Steve, whom he offers to buy drinks for if he acts as their legal adult. When Simon receives a text from Carli, they all realise that they are in the wrong pub and head for the Black Horse; upon arrival, Simon finds himself snubbed by Carli, who has brought her older, much taller boyfriend Tom (Ollie Holme) with her. The barman refuses to serve alcohol to Will without ID proving he is at least 18, leading Will to lose his temper and reveal in an enraged outburst that the pub is full of underage students, leading to them all being kicked out and barred as Gilbert walks in and mockingly applauds Will's work. Outside, Mark threatens to get back at Will at some point during the school year as revenge for his actions. Jay and Neil are also deeply annoyed that Will spoiled the evening, but Simon finds himself amused by the many insults Will aimed at the other students when revealing they were underage, and begins warming up to him as a new friend.[3]
