Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City is an upcoming American drama web television miniseries set to premiere in 2019 on Netflix.

Premise

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City follows "Mary Ann, who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane."[1]

Development

On June 28, 2017, it was announced that Netflix was developing a revival of the Tales of the City series of miniseries based on the book series by Armistead Maupin, who was expected to return as an executive producer.[2]

On April 23, 2018, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order consisting of ten episodes. The series is set to be showrun and written by Lauren Morelli who will also executive produce alongside Maupin, Alan Poul, Laura Linney, Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner. Michael Cunningham will serve as a consulting producer and Poul is also expected to direct. Production companies involved with the series include Working Title Television and NBCUniversal International.[1][3][4][5]

Casting

Alongside the initial series development announcement, it was reported that Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis would reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal, respectively.[2] Concurrent with the news of the series order, it was confirmed that Linney, Dukakis, and Barbara Garrick would be reprising their roles, and that Ellen Page would be joining the main cast of the production in a new role.[1]

Filming

Principal photography for the series had reportedly begun by July 2018 in New York City, New York.[6]
