The November 2016 San Diego general elections were on November 8, 2016, in San Diego, California. Although the June primary election is referred to as a primary, it functions as a general election. Races that result in no candidate receiving the majority of votes in the June election, advance to the November run-off election. This method changed after Measure K was passed by voters to advance the top-two candidates for mayor, city attorney, or council member to the November general election, regardless of the number of votes either candidate has.[1]
The elections included two seats to the San Diego City Council, three seats to the independent San Diego Unified School District Board of Education, one seat to the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees, twelve San Diego City ballot measures, and two San Diego County ballot measures.
City Attorney
City Council
District 1
Since no candidate received a majority of the votes in the June primary, Bry and Ellis were slated to advance to the November runoff election.[2] However, on August 12, 2016 Ellis announced that he would be withdrawing from the election.[3] Despite effectively conceding the race, Ellis's name still appeared on November ballot.[4] Bry was then elected to the City Council in November.
