Pusad is the second largest Municipal Council in the Yavatmal district in the region of Vidarbha in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is named after the Pus river. Its ancient name was 'Pushpawanti'.

Climate

Pusad's climate is extreme, with temperatures ranging as high as 49°C (120°F) during summer to as low as 5°C (41°F) during winter. This temperature range is a result of the "Basket Effect" (i.e. high-altitude hillside effect), as Pusad is surrounded by hills.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Indian census, Pusad has a population of 73,046[1], 52% male, and 48% female. Pusad has an average literacy rate of 70% (77% male / 62% female). Roughly 14% of the population is under 6.

Two former Maharashtra Chief Ministers, Vasantrao Naik, and Sudhakarrao Naik, were from Pusad.

Religion

Many temples are found in and around Pusad. The Shakti Pitha Mahur is located 40 km east of the city. Temples include:

  • Dudhagiri Maharaj Temple: Situated in the Village, Dudhagiri, this is one of the most famous temples in Pusad.
  • Sargadi Aai Temple: Located at Chondhi Village (15 km from Bus Stand, Pusad).
  • Karla Temple: Temple of Lord Krishna (5 km from Bus Stand, Pusad).

Transport

Pusad is connected to major cities in the Maharashtra State by road. MSRTC buses run from Pusad to Mumbai, Nagpur, Yavatmal, Pune, Amravati, Akola, Washim, Hingoli, Nanded, Solapur, Aurangabad, Raipur, Umarkhed, Mahur, Ansing, Adilabad, Mahagaon and Indore. Roads in Pusad are equipped with traffic signals recently built in 2017.

In the British era, Pusad was connected to nearby towns by rail, but this service was later discontinued. The remains of old railway tracks are found at nearby places. Pusad Railway Station is a planned on upcoming Wardha-Nanded Railway route. Nearest railway station is at Washim 60km and Nanded 110km.

Nearest airport is Nanded 110km and Nagpur 270km.
