Piyush Vedprakash Goyal (born 13 June 1964) is an Indian politician. He is the current minister of Railways, Coal and Corporate Affairs in the Government of India, He was elevated to Cabinet Minister position on 3 September 2017. He is currently a Member of Parliament for Rajya Sabha from the state of Maharashtra and was earlier the National Treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He headed the BJP's Information Communication Campaign Committee and oversaw the publicity and advertising campaign of the party including the social media outreach for the Indian General Elections 2014.[2]
Personal life
He is the son of Late Shri Ved Prakash Goyal who had served as a Union Minister for shipping in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet and was also in Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for a long time.[3]His mother Chandrakanta Goel was a three time MLA from Maharashtra.
He has had a strong academic record - all-India second rank holder Chartered Accountant[4] and second rank holder in Law in Mumbai University. He has participated in Leadership Programs at Yale University (2011), Oxford University (2012) and Princeton University (2013) and is currently pursuing the Owner / President Management (OPM) Program at Harvard Business School. He did his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Matunga.[5]
He is married to Seema Goyal and they have two children, both of whom studied at Harvard University.[6]
Career
He served on the board of India’s largest commercial banks, the State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda.
Piyush was a member of the Standing Committee on Finance and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence. An active member of the Managing Committee of Indian Merchants Chamber, he is also involved with NGOs in diverse fields such as tribal education and welfare of the physically challenged (Jaipur Foot).[7]
During his 28-year-long political career, he has served on the National Executive and held several important positions in the BJP. He was also nominated by the Government of India to the Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers. He was the Dy. Campaign In-charge for the Parliament elections in 1991 and played a key role at the central level in all elections since 2004.
He was elected as the Bhatiya Janta Party candidate from Maharashtra for the Rajya Sabha on 3 June 2016.[8][9]
Union minister
Piyush Goyal was Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy in the Government of India.[10]
He said that his ministry has been able to electrify 13,134 remote villages by April 2017 out of 18,452. He also claimed to have added another 60 GW capacity in his tenure of two years as compared to addition of 240 GW in last 65 years.[11] He launched the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) to revive debt ridden Power DISCOMS of the country in 2015 and has managed to sign MOU's with 27 states as of April 2017.[12]
He revised the Government's target of 20 GW of solar power by 2022 to five times (i.e. 100 GW).[13]
On 5 July 2016, during the second cabinet reshuffle of the Narendra Modi ministry, Piyush Goyal took over as the Minister of Mines (Minister of State with Independent charge) from Narendra Singh Tomar.[14] He became the Minister of Railways on 3 September 2017.[15]
In May 2018, he has been given additional charge of Ministry of Finance as Arun Jaitly has to undergo through medical treatment.
