Mitsuke (見附市, Mitsuke-shi) is a city located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 June 2016, the city had an estimated population of 40,467, and a population density of 519 persons per km². Its total area is 77.01 square kilometres (29.73 sq mi). The area of Mitsuke city is the smallest in Niigata Prefecture.

Geography

Mitsuke is located in an inland region near the geographical centre of Niigata Prefecture, it has a monument called the "Navel of Niigata" (新潟のへそ, Niigata no heso).

History

The area of present-day Mitsuke was part of ancient Echigo Province. The town of Mitsuke was established on April 1, 1887 with the creation of the municipalities system within Minamikanbara District, Niigata. It was raised to city status on March 31, 1954.
