This American whaler in the Arctic had been lying-to in a gale for 4 days when the depth began to shoal and before they could get under way she grounded on a sand bank and was lost. The sea being too rough for the boats, 5 men were drowned using spars to get ashore. They survived with hospitality from the indigenous people. Between February and April 1853 some parties attempted the 225 miles to Cape Dezhnev cross the ice, the remainder were rescued by the Bremen ship Joseph Haydon on 2 July who had heard of the wreck and had been searching for them.[6] |
