Louis  United Kingdom The smack was abandoned in the Bristol Channel. Her crew were rescued by the fishing vessel Ann ( United Kingdom). Louis came ashore at Port Eynon Point, Glamorgan and was wrecked. She was on a voyage from Llanelli, Glamorgan to Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France.[1]

John Gilpin  United States The clipper collided with an iceberg in the South Atlantic 150 nautical miles (280 km) off the Falkland Islands. She was abandoned the next day. Her crew were rescued by Hertfordshire ( United Kingdom).

Elizabeth  France The whaling barque was wrecked on a submerged reef some 3 miles (4.8 km) off the northeastern shore of Chatham Island, New Zealand. The crew were saved with the help of the United States whaler Seine, but the Elizabeth was a total wreck.[2]

HMS Sappho  Royal Navy The 16-gun brig-sloop was sighted off Cape Bridgewater, Victoria, Australia. No further trace, presumed foundered in the Bass Strait with the loss of all hands.

Eliza Battle  United States The steamboat was destroyed by fire in the Tombigbee River at Pennington, Alabama. There were around thirty casualties from around 100 people on board.

Port Glasgow United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland New Zealand The schooner was wrecked at Fitzroy Bay, just south of the entrance to Wellington Harbour. She was carrying grain from Port Cooper to Wellington. All the crew perished, but some of the cargo was saved.[4]

The passenger ship was destroyed by fire in the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of about 500 lives. Sixty-five survivors were rescued by Caterina ( Norway) and Maurice ( France).

Oliver Lang United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland New Zealand The clipper ship left Plymouth for Wellington in June 1858, arriving in New Zealand in mid-September, carrying some 300 passengers. En route, she had collided with the Hamburg-registered barque Shan, and both vessels had sustained damage. Shortly after arriving at Wellington Harbour, a strong wind sprang up, and the Oliver Lang was driven on shore, apparently due to negligent handling. She was refloated, but a few days later, on September 25, a heavy gale drove her onto Te Aro beach, by which point she was totally wrecked.[8]

Rajah  United States The New Bedford bark was wrecked on the north side of Bolshoy Shantar Island, Sea of Okhotsk during a gale. Thirteen men, including the captain, perished while thirteen were saved by the ship Condor ( United States).[11]

Carrier  United States The 345-ton sidewheel paddle steamer struck a snag and sank in the Missouri River. She was refloated, repaired, and returned to service.[13]
Cyclops Unknown During a voyage from San Francisco, California, to Coquille, Oregon, the schooner was wrecked on the Coos Bay Bar in Coos Bay off the coast of Oregon either in 1858 or in the spring of 1862.[14]
Panama United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland New Zealand The brig went missing while en route between the Chatham Islands and the New Zealand mainland early in 1858. Some wreckage believed to have been from the Panama was washed ashore near Cape Kidnappers in early September.[4]
