As of June 2018, 44 international five-wicket hauls have been taken at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, 27 in Tests, 16 in One Day Internationals and 1 during a WODI match.[1][2]

The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, formerly known as the Mirpur Stadium due to its location in the city's locality of Mirpur, is a sports ground in Dhaka, Bangladesh that has hosted international cricket matches along with provincial games.[3] It is named after A. K. Fazlul Huq, the first Prime Minister of Bengal, who was accorded the title Sher-e-Bangla ("The Tiger of Bengal").[4] The venue was taken over by the Bangladesh Cricket Board in 2004, replacing the Bangabandhu National Stadium as the home of both the men's and women's national teams. It has a capacity of 25,000 spectators for international matches.[3] The first One Day International (ODI) at the ground was played between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in 2006,[5] and the first Test was held between Bangladesh and India the following year.[6] As of June 2018, the ground has played host to 17 Test matches and 105 ODI matches.[7][8]

A five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[9][10] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[11] The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul at Mirpur was Zaheer Khan for India against Bangladesh during the ground's debut Test match in May 2007.[12][13] The most recent five-wicket haul, as of June 2018, was taken by Sri Lanka's Akila Dananjaya during the second Test against Bangladesh in February 2018.[14] Taking 5 wickets for 24 runs, Dananjaya became the third Sri Lankan bowler to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut.[15] West Indian Sohag Gazi is the only other bowler to achieve the feat on Test debut at this ground.[16][17] Bangladesh's Taijul Islam has returned the best Test bowling figures at the venue with 8 wickets for 39 runs, followed by Zaheer Khan with figures of 7 for 87.[18] A further six players have taken a six-wicket haul,[19] including Shahadat Hossain of Bangladesh with the most economical Test five-wicket haul at Mirpur with an economy rate of 1.74.[20] As of June 2018, the Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan tops the list, with seven Test five-wicket hauls well ahead of Mehedi Hasan and Zaheer Khan with two each.[21] As of June 2018, 27 five-wicket hauls have been taken in Test matches at this ground by 19 different players.[22]

Farhad Reza of Bangladesh was the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul at the ground during an ODI match, taking 5/42 against Ireland in March 2008.[23][24] As of June 2018, the most recent five-wicket haul was taken by England's Jake Ball during the first ODI against Bangladesh in October 2016.[25] Ball is one of four players to take a five-wicket haul during their ODI debut at the venue,[26] the others being Bangladesh's Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman and Kagiso Rabada of South Africa,[27] making the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium the only venue where four bowlers have achieved this feat.[28] Rabada's figures of 6 for 16, as of June 2018, is the best by a bowler on ODI debut[29] and he is the second bowler to take a hat-trick on ODI debut.[30] Two other players took hat-tricks as part of their ODI five-wicket hauls on this ground, Abdur Razzak against Zimbabwe in 2010,[31] and Rubel Hossain against New Zealand in 2013.[32] Kemar Roach's 5/56 came in the West Indies defeat to Bangladesh – one of only two occurrences that did not result in a victory to the team taking the ODI five-wicket haul.[33] The other was Bangladesh's loss to India in June 2014 where two five-wicket hauls were taken in the match – Taskin Ahmed's 5/28 on debut and Stuart Binny's 6 wickets for 4 runs,[34] the best ODI bowling figures achieved at the ground.[35] Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh leads the list with three ODI five-wicket hauls ahead of his compatriot Abdur Razzak with two.[36] As of June 2018, 13 different players have taken 16 five-wicket hauls in ODI matches at this ground.[37]

From the seven women's One Day International (WODI) matches that been contested at the ground,[38] as of June 2018, a sole five-wicket haul has been taken.[2] During the final 2011 Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament, Anisa Mohammed took 7/14 to help the West Indies secure victory against Pakistan.[39] As of June 2018, the ground has hosted 37 Twenty20 International matches[40] and 6 women's Twenty20 International matches[41] and no five-wicket hauls have been taken in these formats.[42][43]
