An aerial view of the Adelaide Oval

The Adelaide Oval is an Australian sports stadium located in Adelaide, South Australia, and is home to the South Australia cricket team. It has a seating capacity of 50,000 and is recorded as the first venue in history to hold a day-night test match.[1]

The Adelaide Oval hosted the First Test match played between Australia and England in 1884, and has since been the venue of more than 90 Test matches.[2] The ground witnessed the first ever day-night test match in the history as well in front of 33,923 spectators, where Australia won the match by 3 wickets against New Zealand.[3]

The first One Day International at the venue was held in 1975, between Australia and West Indies. Since then more than 80 ODIs have been held.[4] In 2011, the ground held its first ever Twenty20 International between Australia and England. Up to March 2017, only 4 T20Is are held at the venue.[5]

In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[6][7] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[8]

The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at the Adelaide Oval was Englishman Johnny Briggs in 1892, in the second innings of the first Test. He also took another fifer at the fourth innings and became the first man to take a ten-wicket haul at the venue as well.[9] The first Australian to take a five-wicket haul in a Test at the venue was George Giffen, against England in 1895, in the second innings of the first Test.[10] The best bowling figures of an innings at Adelaide Oval was recorded by England bowler Albert Trott, when he took 8 for 43 runs against Australia in 1895.[11]

As of March 2017, 103 Test, 13 ODI five-wicket hauls have been taken at the Adelaide Oval.

The first ODI five-wicket haul was taken by West Indian pacer Andy Roberts against England in 1980, when he took 5 for 22 runs.[12] The first 5-wicket haul taken by an Australian was by Carl Rackemann against Pakistan in 1984, with the figures of 5 for 16 runs, which is also recorded as the best ODI bowling figures at the venue.[13]

No bowler has taken a 5-wicket haul in a T20I match at the ground.
